He said, "I am." Fourth, what is the meaning of the names such as subtle latent tendencies? Why are these afflictions called subtle latent tendencies, etc.? Because these afflictions (are not corporeal,) and are difficult to realize by their nature of being born from the mind, therefore they enter subtly, and because of obtaining and being associated with them, they are subtle. They increase through the two aspects of object and association, and they appear again and again in the continuum without effort, so they also follow the continuous aspect, therefore they are increasing, so they are said to be subtle latent tendencies. In particular, if one is not free from desire from the three realms, these afflictions cause beings to abide in samsara, and from the peak of existence to the Avici hell, they flow out through the gate of the six sense sources, or they carry beings to the ocean of samsara, to other realms, destinies, and birthplaces, or they cause consciousness to enter the object, or they connect the continuum in samsara, realms, destinies, and birthplaces, or they cause consciousness to reach other objects, or they cause consciousness to grasp in samsara, therefore, in order, these outflows, etc., are called rivers, bonds, and acquisitions, these are their definitive terms. The teachers explain: These cause the continuum of consciousness to abide and transfer to the object, so they are outflows; like a river, they are carried away by the great force of afflictions, so they are rivers; they are combined with various sufferings such as birth, or they are constantly combined in the continuum, so they are bonds; because of acquiring desires, etc., so they are acquisitions, the desire of craving itself is the acquisition, this is a very good explanation. Fifth, explaining all the bonds: These subtle latent tendencies themselves are all the bonds, and the fetters, subtle latent tendencies, near afflictions, and pervasive entanglements included by "etc.", with these differences they are again divided into five types, which are separately explained in the Sutras and Abhidharma. Among them, the subtle latent tendencies have already been explained, and the others will be explained in order. Among them, the Sutra says: All the bonds are nine, namely, attachment, anger, pride, ignorance, views, grasping, doubt,

Doubt, jealousy, and miserliness are all said to be pervasive afflictions, causing beings to generate attachment. If these exist, they pervasively connect with various differences of suffering, hence they are called pervasive afflictions. Among them, the four pervasive afflictions of attachment, pride, ignorance, and doubt are common to the three realms; the three of anger, jealousy, and miserliness are unique to the desire realm; the pervasive affliction of views is the first three views of the three realms; and the pervasive affliction of holding as supreme is the latter two views. These nine pervasive afflictions obscure nine antidotes. If there is attachment to the three realms, renunciation will not arise, thus the pervasive affliction of attachment obscures renunciation. Since it is impossible to remain calm towards the object of anger, the pervasive affliction of anger obscures equanimity. The remaining seven obscure the seeing of reality as it is. Therefore, at the time of realization, the pride of "I" arises, thus the pervasive affliction of pride obscures the complete knowledge of the view of the aggregates of destruction (satkayadrishti). Since one does not understand that the aggregates of appropriation are impermanent and not self-existent, the pervasive affliction of ignorance obscures the complete knowledge of the basis of the view of the aggregates of destruction. Since the first two views are afraid of this and slander wrong views, the pervasive affliction of views obscures the complete knowledge of the truth of cessation. Since one holds other paths as supreme and pure, the pervasive affliction of holding as supreme obscures the complete knowledge of the truth of the path. Since one does not believe in the qualities of the Three Jewels, the pervasive affliction of doubt obscures the complete knowledge of the Three Jewels. Since one does not see the faults of gain and honor, the pervasive affliction of jealousy obscures the complete knowledge of gain and honor. Since one is particularly attached to possessions, the pervasive affliction of miserliness obscures the complete knowledge of relinquishing possessions. As the Madhyantavibhaga states: "Pervasive afflictions are obscurations, renunciation and equanimity, as well as, seeing reality, the view of the aggregates of destruction and its basis, cessation, path, and the Three Jewels, gain and honor, the complete knowledge of relinquishing possessions, are all obscured." Therefore, the number is determined to be nine.
