Having obtained a name, for example, when a golden vessel is destroyed and transformed into another vessel, the essence and color of the gold do not change, only the shape of the vessel changes. When milk turns into yogurt, it only loses some qualities such as taste and energy, but the substance and color do not change, so they say. The one who asserts that the nature changes is the venerable Dbyangs sgrogs. This is based on relying on obtaining the entry of nature to make designations. Because one thing possesses the nature of past, future, and present arising, therefore it is established in the three times through different natures, but they completely do not have the nature of other times, nor are they different substances. For example, a woman with desire, having desire does not mean that she does not have desire for other things, so they say. The one who asserts that the state changes is the venerable Dbyig bshes. This is based on relying on different states (for example, when the past nature is dominant, it is established as the past. Therefore) to make designations. When one thing enters various times, that dharma either does not act, or acts, or stops after acting, these three states are sequentially called future, present, and past. Therefore, when one thing reaches the state of that time, it obtains the name of that time, so in states such as the past, only the name changes, but the substance does not change. For example, the same number, placed in the ones place is one, placed in the hundreds place is one hundred, placed in the thousands place is one thousand, so they say. The one who asserts that it becomes other and other is the venerable Sangs rgyas lha. This is based on relying on the former and latter to make designations. When the same thing enters various times, the former, relying on both the past and present, is considered the future, the latter, relying on both the present and future, is considered the past, the former, relying on the past, and the latter, relying on the future, are considered the present. For example, the same woman, relying on her daughter, becomes a mother, and relying on her mother, becomes a daughter, so they say. Regarding this (for these, the teacher says), the thing becoming other is (first) the Samkhya school that asserts transformation (material existence)

They will be gathered in (because they want to receive the Dharma on the ground). If one says that the nature changes, then because each moment possesses the nature of the three times, it will lead to confusion of time, and it will become the fault of the example and meaning not matching. If it becomes other and other, then the past time also has the three: before, middle, and after. Therefore, those in order become the three: past, future, and present. Even just one past will simultaneously appear as the three times. Because there is such a fault, the third saying, that temporarily becoming other is the best. Because the three: not doing from not being born, doing, and stopping after doing, make the three times distinctively established. Although it is said like this, I have not seen any difference except that the four have different names. If so, how do the three times change? If it is said that because everything exists as a substance in the present. The Vaibhashika says: The action that has ceased is the past. The action that has not arisen is the future. The action that has arisen but has not ceased is the present, so the three times are established by action, hasn't it already been said? The teacher says, if that is the case, then the present eye will not become the present because it does not look at its own object of action. The Vaibhashika says, even though that eye does not perform the action of looking, it is the present because it performs the action of producing similar causes and persons, and holding and giving results. The teacher says, if that is the case, then the present and the past, one of which is given by the past, will appear, and the past causes of equal share, universal going, and complete ripening will also become the present, because those have the action of giving results. If it is said that having both the actions of holding and giving results is called the present, then those, although having the giving of results, do not have holding, so they will not become the present. If that is the case, then because the three times are established by action, the part of the action of holding the result that has stopped becomes the past, and having the action of giving becomes the present, so it will become the fault of the confusion of the nature of the three times, thus the fault is blamed. Furthermore, in order to refute this, because the past and the future exist as substances

Then, what obstructs the action of things? Even those things will constantly act. If it is said that things do not act because the causes and conditions are not complete, then, since it has been admitted that all causes and conditions are constantly present, it is unreasonable for things that are constantly present to be incomplete. If the cessation of action is in the future, then things and actions are not the same, and if that is the case, things will have no action. How is that action, is it past, etc.? Or is it not? If according to the first case, then action also has a second action, because that action must also be considered as the three times of action cessation, action, and non-arising. If according to the second case, then action becomes unconditioned, because it is not included by time. If it is said that action is not different from things, then, action cannot be distinguished in the three times, because things and actions are the same, and past and future things also exist now, so action also exists. If things exist now as they are, then why are unborn and destroyed things unborn and destroyed? Because they exist. If unborn and destroyed are actions, then, because that is also the nature of things, it will exist like things, the master said. Anything that has the characteristics of conditioned things will not be permanent. Saying this is just a saying, because things exist at all times, so birth and death are impossible. Therefore, in the commentary it says: "Nature is also always present, things are not always desired, things are not different from nature, and freedom is just a name." It is said like this. The Blessed One said that the past and the future exist, which means that the past has already happened, and the future will happen if there are causes and conditions. It is said in the sense of existence from this point of view, but it does not mean that the nature of matter exists, such as saying that the lamp is extinguished, etc. The consciousness of mind depends on both Dharma and mind. The mind mentioned here refers to the mind that arises following the previous mind, or the mind that is defiled by afflictions. The object of consciousness is the past and the future.
