The three meditators who are self-righteous and arrogant are obscured and unrecorded. They believe that these three meditations also arise from ignorance. Then, in the long discourses, it is said that meditation is a metaphor, the absorption of the formless realm is unrecorded, and there are other things such as the obscuration of desire. Are self and the world permanent or impermanent, or both, or neither? Are they finite or infinite, or both, or neither? Does the Tathagata exist after death or not, or both, or neither? Is the body the same as life, or is life different and the body also different? Are these fourteen unrecorded things that are spoken of unrecorded as good or bad? No. This is an unrecorded statement that does not answer the question but should be put aside. How is it? There are four kinds of answers to questions: first, direct recording; second, separate recording; third, questioning recording; and fourth, putting aside recording. The first, for example, if asked: Will all born beings die? The answer is: They will die. The second, for example, if asked: Will all who die be born? The answer is: Those without afflictions will not be born, and those with afflictions will be born. The third, for example, if asked: Is this person particularly superior? Or is it inferior? If asked: Is it asked in relation to the gods or in relation to the evil realms? Ask him himself, and if he says in relation to the gods, then it is inferior; if asked in relation to the evil realms, then it is particularly superior. The fourth, for example, if asked: Are I and the aggregates different or the same? And, what is held by these and so on, is it both or neither? No answer is given to these. In this way, among the four kinds of question recording, these fourteen are not good, but they are not necessarily clearly recorded, so they are called unrecorded. Therefore, even the Blessed One did not record these, because if they are all based on self, then it is not established; if it is said that there is not, they will be afraid, so the teaching of these should be gradual.

It is because of existence. If it is said to contradict the prophecy, then it is said that prophecies are not made in those places, because of making prophecies, there is no contradiction. Therefore, it is also said in the sutras that there are four ways of asking questions and prophesying. What are the four? One is asking questions and prophesying in a general way, one is asking questions and prophesying in a differentiated way, one is asking questions and prophesying in a questioning way, and one is prophesying in a differentiated and established way. The general prophecy itself, as well as other differentiated prophecies, the questioning prophecy is the third, and the differentiated establishment is the fourth. These four questioning prophecies, for each of them, there is a sequence. Those who know and speak like this, that bhikkhu is a wise person. Thus, it is also said that differentiated establishment is also the prophecy itself. Sixth, explaining the way of having is: (Regarding the way of having subtle growth, the subtle growth of any person, the person who grows with what as the goal, is bound by that subtle growth, and also has its object. The subtle growth of the five sense consciousnesses, through the way of the object, makes itself have its own object. The subtle growth of consciousness, through the way of the object, has the twelve sources. All pervasive actions, through the way of the object, have the five realms, and non-pervasive actions only have their own realm. Those that correspond to this, have through the way of correspondence, it is the same for everything.) Afflictions have two kinds, self-characteristic and common-characteristic. The first kind is desire, anger, and pride, because they aim at the self-characteristic of the object. Desire and pride arise and are proud by aiming at the object of experiencing happiness, while anger aims at the object of experiencing suffering. The second kind is view, doubt, and ignorance, which aim at the three objects of experiencing happiness, experiencing suffering, and experiencing equanimity, etc., without distinction, each accordingly. For this, the desire, anger, and pride that have arisen in the past, present, and future, no matter in which retinue of consciousness (because it is the place of the six consciousnesses, it is the six consciousnesses) they arise, it is okay. Afflictions aim at the objects of the three times, the five realms to be abandoned

Those objects of the environment that have arisen and have not been abandoned are like tying a calf to a stake with a rope, making the person possess (these things). (If one cannot focus on all these objects, and if one abandons them, the objects will not increase.) Among them, attachment and aversion arise in the retinue of the five consciousnesses, while pride only arises in the retinue of the mind consciousness. "Arisen" means that these defilements are self-characterized, because it is impossible for something contradictory not to arise. "Not abandoned" means that even if it arises, if it is abandoned, it is not possessed. Therefore, in order to prevent these, these two words are spoken. "Possessing" also means that by focusing on those objects, the person (becomes what should be abandoned) possesses, but it does not mean possessing the (attainment) of the object, because (except for the two cessations,) there is no (attainment) possessing outside the continuum. (Therefore, it only possesses its own category. From this, it can be inferred that all objects that do not increase are not possessed. Whichever continuum the attainment of defilements exists in, that object is possessed by that person, it is said.) Therefore, for the greed etc. that arose in the past and present, because there is no difference, it is generally said. Because there is a difference in the future, in order to say this, the three types of greed etc. that arise in the retinue of the mind consciousness, because of the future, possess all objects that arise in the past, future, and present in a way of focusing. Because in the object of mind, the dharmas of the three times exist. That is, whoever has not abandoned, that's who they are. Different from the mind, the greed and anger that arise in the retinue of the five sense consciousnesses, the future ones, only possess the object's own time, the future things. Because those consciousnesses do not focus on the past (and future). It is like that for those who have the nature of arising, but for those who do not have the nature of arising, even the greed and anger that arise in the retinue of the five sense consciousnesses, (if not abandoned,) also possess all things of the three times in a way of focusing. (That is, because there are many of those, they possess in a way that can be focused on, but not actually focused on.) The remainder of those self-characteristics (the three general characteristics), view, doubt, and ignorance, are those.
