The afflictions of the higher realms, although they focus on them (in terms of focus), do not increase. Because the uncontaminated and higher grounds are not taken as self by the lower grounds through self-view and craving (i.e., they cannot focus on them), and because they are the antidotes to those afflictions. Growth is continuous growth, but they are not suitable for growth. Therefore, the teacher Guangzeng also said: Subtle growth has two types: pervasive and non-pervasive. The first type also has two types: the same realm and ground, and unequal. Non-pervasive also has two types: focusing on contaminated and focusing on uncontaminated. Among them, pervasive ones focus on all five objects to be abandoned, while non-pervasive ones focus only on their respective objects to be abandoned. Among them, those that focus on the uncontaminated and the higher realms and grounds that are unequal are increased by association, but not by focus. Just as seedlings do not grow in a field with hail, whatever gives rise to self-view and craving, others will also increase, but self-view and craving do not arise for the uncontaminated and higher grounds, because these two focus on their own aggregates of clinging. If one dwells in the desire realm and seeks the uncontaminated and higher grounds, how is that not craving? This is aspiration for virtuous Dharma. (Some say that the meaning of subtle growth is the meaning of conformity, but the uncontaminated and higher grounds are not in conformity with them, just like a person with wind disease eating rough food. Therefore, wrong views that focus on the uncontaminated cannot cut off the roots of virtue.) Which subtle growths are associated with many grounds of mind and mental factors, etc.? Those subtle growths are friends, that is, they grow by association until they are abandoned (just as wine mixed with poison increases the power of the poison). In this way, among the ninety-eight subtle growths, the twelve that focus on the uncontaminated are only increased by association, and the six ignorances to be abandoned by the path of cessation and seeing, and the eighteen pervasive ones of the two lower realms, these twenty-four focus on the contaminated and uncontaminated objects.
