That's all. Thus, since it is said that the eighteen subtle attachments of the three realms take the uncontaminated as their object, then the remaining eighty subtle attachments are shown to take the contaminated as their object. Furthermore, why is it that only wrong views and so forth are those that take the uncontaminated as their object, and not desire and so forth? Cessation and the path are not taken as objects by desire, because its object is what is to be abandoned, and cessation and the path are not what is to be abandoned. (Taking the uncontaminated as an object is not necessarily what is to be abandoned, like aspiration.) Wanting to attain and cultivate cessation and the path is aspiration for virtuous Dharma, and not desire. Similarly, cessation and the path are not taken as objects by hatred, because hatred takes as its object harming what has been done, is being done, or will be done, but cessation and the path transcend the characteristics of the nine bases of all tormenting thoughts, so they do not harm anyone. Cessation and the path are not taken as objects by pride because they are for peace, because it refers to arrogance of mind. The truth of the path is the cause of purity because it has truly abandoned the stains of defilements, so it is not taken as an object by holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, because it clings to what is not a true cause. Cessation and the path are pure for the sake of true meaning, and are the most supreme of all dharmas, so they are not taken as objects by holding views as supreme, because it is a view that holds inferior things as supreme. Therefore, among the ninety-eight subtle attachments, twelve are only those that take the uncontaminated as their object, eighty take only the contaminated as their object, and the six ignorances of cessation and the path to be abandoned by seeing take both the contaminated and the uncontaminated as their object. Thus, it is directly shown that, by implication, those that take the uncontaminated as their object are actually wrong conduct, and those of cessation and the path to be abandoned by seeing that take the contaminated as their object actually take wrong conduct, wrong views, and so forth as their objects, so it should be known that what is wrong is wrong conduct. According to the upper ones, the six wrong views and so forth of cessation and the path to be abandoned by seeing also only take as their object the name of cessation and the path that is conceptualized by the mind with conceptualization, but in reality they do not take those as their object. If they directly took the uncontaminated as their object, then those would become the wisdom of the noble ones.

Therefore, it is considered to be for the sake of increase. In the 'Collection of Determinations,' if we summarize the objects of what is abandoned by seeing and what is abandoned by meditation, there are five: focusing on objects that are wrongly conceived, focusing on views, focusing on ethics and asceticism, focusing on names that are self-conceived, and focusing on objects that exist naturally. Among these, the first is those that focus on the first two truths. The second is the views to be abandoned by seeing, such as holding views as supreme and desire, excluding doubt. The third is holding ethics and asceticism as supreme. The fourth is those that focus on cessation and the path, and those that focus on different realms. Afflictions never focus on cessation and the path, do not focus, and will not focus, nor do they focus on different realms. The fifth is what is abandoned by meditation. Therefore, the first four are the objects of what is abandoned by seeing, and the fifth is the object of what is abandoned by meditation. Also, in the 'Compendium of Topics,' it says: 'Whatever afflictions focus on cessation and the path, they are not regarded as focusing on those, but rather as contemplating them completely.' However, the Vaibhashikas reply that even if one focuses on the uncontaminated, it is not certain that one will become a noble being, just as one holds sound to be permanent. Third, regarding the distinction between increase and non-increase, among the ninety-eight latent defilements, if asked: Is it increased by the object or increased by association? (What is increased by the object is also increased by association, and there are also those that are increased only by association. All travelers among the latent defilements are of two types: those who travel to all places in their own realm and ground, and those who travel to all unequal realms and grounds.) All those who are said to be travelers among the latent defilements increase in all five categories of what is to be abandoned in their own ground through the object, and those who are not travelers increase in what belongs to their own category, but not in other categories. Therefore, what is abandoned by seeing in the truth of suffering only increases in what is abandoned by seeing in the truth of suffering, and so on. So, does everything increase by focusing on its own object? The uncontaminated and
