Giving restoration, giving medicine to the sick, giving to the Sangha who have the perfection of discipline, samadhi, wisdom, and the wisdom of liberation at the right time, giving fearlessness to crows, owls, deer, etc. who have gone to the realm of animals, and fulfilling the wish for whatever is needed and for happiness without worry, this is a great field of giving, called the nine great givings. Any sentient beings who, when encouraged by others in this way, generate faith and joy and rejoice in this completely pure giving, they equally become accumulators of merit and patrons. Therefore, whoever rejoices and whoever encourages, all of them equally become accumulators of merit. Therefore, it is said that by practicing encouragement and rejoicing, one can equally obtain merit. Furthermore, it says in that same text: Great ascetic, the giver completely gives away the object of giving, generates faith, and causes others to act, and even if he himself goes to another place and causes others to act, if that is also considered completely giving away wealth, then whoever the wealth belongs to is the patron. Giving by causing others to act is the giver, not the patron. Whoever gives his own wealth himself is both the giver and the patron. Therefore, it is said that there are four possibilities for the patron and the giver. In the Bodhisattva Grounds, ten completely pure givings are explained: giving immediately when the beggar arrives, without delay, this is unobstructed giving; not considering wrong views and the causes of the world and the world beyond as supreme, this is giving without attachment to the supreme; giving whatever is available when begging, not accumulating for a long time, not giving at one time, this is giving without accumulation; for beggars, abandoning the idea of inferiority and the idea of competing with others, praising oneself and belittling others, this is giving without arrogance; fame arises from conceptual thought, is only related to sound, and is like a dry leaf, therefore not giving for the sake of fame, sound, and verses, this is giving without reliance; being joyful in preparation, and when actually giving, the mind

For me, giving without regret, and not belittling myself for not being able to give vast offerings, giving without cowardice; not giving small amounts of inferior items, but choosing to give large amounts of superior items, not being a stingy giving; not distinguishing between those who are met, friends, enemies, and ordinary people, but giving equally to all beings with compassion, giving without partiality; giving only with compassion, without expecting a return from the other in this life, giving without looking for a return; because all compounded things are impermanent and without essence, not for the sake of a perfect body and enjoyment in the future life, not expecting a mature giving. Furthermore, generally speaking, for beggars and those who are not harmonious, those who are diligent in discipline, and those who are pure in conduct, giving leftover food and drink, and items contaminated by feces and the like, and worn-out items, giving without letting them understand what these things are like; similarly, it is forbidden to give garlic, onions, meat, and alcohol to those who do not consume them. However, in special cases, if it is directly or indirectly beneficial to others, it is said that poison, fire, weapons, and alcohol can also be given. In the "Garland of Jewels," it is also said, "For whom poison is beneficial, poison should also be given to them." Furthermore, in the "Bodhisattva Bhumi," it is said, "Whatever is done by oneself alone, that is a great fruit of merit. Whatever is caused to be done by another alone, that is a very great fruit of merit. Whatever is done in common, that is an exceedingly great fruit of merit, it should be known as unsurpassed." Doing it alone, causing only others to do it, doing it together with others and causing others to do it, compared to these, the latter is greater in merit than the former. The sutra says that if one gives to those who have entered and abide in the fruit of the stream-enterer, it is said to be immeasurable and exceedingly immeasurable respectively, not only that, but even if they are not noble ones, the merit of giving to the kind (field of benefit), parents and fruit (field of suffering), the sick, the Dharma speakers, and the last-born Bodhisattvas is also immeasurable, because this is showing the cause and effect of good and evil.
