Giving alms thinking that the fault of indulgence is tolerated by the world; because of loving women, taking them as wives, and for the sake of maintaining relationships and doing things in the future, from the woman's point of view, giving jewels, gold, silver, etc., to please friends, relatives, and related parties; like this, if I have a lot of wealth, I have no son, I should give the wealth to anyone who is suitable; giving alms thinking that giving in this life will gain rewards in the next life; those who, desiring flowers, fruits, and miscellaneous things, abandon the poor, hungry, miserable, ragged, and dirty people, and give to the rich and great. These thirty-two great sages, even if they give alms, are regarded as not completely pure. (They said in verses: Giving for mother and wife, giving in return for favors, giving to please fire, water, and the king, giving out of fear, giving poison, weapons, and killed meat, giving alcohol to the dissolute, for the sake of gathering retinues, giving to astrologers to show off oneself, giving to musicians, giving others' property to friends, giving others' grain to birds, giving to craftsmen, giving to doctors for healing, giving after enjoying, giving while doubting mature things, regretting after giving, giving because thinking that this will bring rewards in the future, thinking that only oneself can enjoy the mature results, giving in youth, old age, sickness, and death, even without faith, giving because persuaded by others, giving to become famous in other places, giving to consolidate one's position, giving for women, or saying that one has no son, giving to gain rewards in the next life, abandoning the poor and giving to the rich. These thirty-two are impure alms.) The fruition of those great sages is like planting bad seeds in salty land, and bad sprouts grow. The fruition of such alms is not non-existent, but due to the fault of the land and seeds, it will not become flowers and fruits. Great sages, for example, if someone takes the seeds they want and sows them in uncultivated and uncleared land,

If the seed remains and it rains, it will sprout and grow, but it will not turn into flowers and fruits. Similarly, great sage, this classification of generosity, if it becomes full of afflictions in thought and action, then the ripening fruit will not become strong. Therefore, thirty-two kinds of impure giving are spoken of. In this regard, some people classify giving to fire, water, and the king as one category, and the three kinds of giving at the time of old age, sickness, and death, as well as giving when persuaded by others without faith, are counted separately, thus making the giver of medicine reach thirty-two kinds. However, if one gives inferior things despite having good things, and the four kinds of giving to fire, water, and the king (the giving), and at the time of old age, sickness, and death, even if one does not have faith but is persuaded by others to give, if these are classified as one category, it is in accordance with the scriptures. In terms of correct giving, great sage, whoever, fearing the next world, does not consider the recipient, whether they are virtuous or immoral, generates faith, opens their eyes, and gives with an equal mind towards all beings, then that great sage is a benefactor. Also, whoever generates faith, focuses on all beings with a loving heart, and gives with respect and gentleness, then all of that is completely pure. This is the characteristic of a benefactor. Also, giving Dharma, giving wealth, giving shelter, giving light, giving incense and garlands, these are the five kinds of giving with the characteristics of wealth. In terms of the characteristics of the field, giving at the appropriate time to guests, the sick, those who care for the sick, those who speak the Dharma, and those who go to other lands, these five kinds of giving should be completely fulfilled. Also, giving to the Tathagata, the Sangha, those who speak the Dharma, the sick, and parents, this is unsurpassed giving. Five kinds of unsurpassed giving are spoken of. Also, giving to a king who has lost the power of his kingdom, who is tormented by the king, who is helpless, giving to the sick, and to those who are abandoned by the king, in a difficult situation, and on the verge of death.
