Thirteenth: Explanation of the Three Bases of Meritorious Deeds. Thirteenth: Explanation of the Three Bases of Meritorious Deeds. Thirteenth: Explanation of the three bases of meritorious deeds, as stated in the sutras: the three bases of meritorious deeds arising from generosity, ethical conduct, and meditation. These three are meritorious because their results are pleasing; they are actions because they are the nature of karma; and they are also the basis for engaging the mind of motivation, because they rely on these three. Therefore, they are the basis of meritorious deeds. For example, the seven actions of body and speech are both actions and paths of action, while the three actions of mind are only paths of action, so all are referred to as paths of action. Here, the term "basis" is intended to refer to the cause. Among them, the actions of body and speech arising from generosity are all three: merit, action, and basis. The motivating mind is merit and action. (It is not a basis because it is not the support of action.) Similarly, other associated dharmas such as feelings are only merit. What arises from ethical conduct is only the action of body and speech, so it is all three. Among what arises from meditation, loving-kindness is both merit and the basis of meritorious action, because through the door of loving-kindness, the mind that corresponds to it is manifested. The mind that arises together with it and the discipline of uncontaminated concentration are both merit and action. (These minds do not rely on it, so they are not a basis.) Other feelings and so on that arise together with loving-kindness are only merit. Alternatively, in order to accomplish these three, one engages in the practice of meritorious deeds, so these three are called the basis of meritorious deeds. Some (Sautrantikas) say that meritorious action is ultimately a virtuous mind, and the three, such as generosity, are the basis of that virtuous mind. What arises from generosity? It is generosity when someone, with a virtuous intention, gives away their possessions to others. As stated in the Sutra Requested by Kasyapa: "Great Sage, whatever little is given with faith, all of that is generosity." Therefore, what is motivation? Wanting to make offerings to good objects, and self-
