Giving is the act of bestowing with the desire to benefit those who are equal or inferior, and not out of fear or expectation of reciprocation, etc. That action is also accompanied by a mind that arises from the actions of body and speech, along with corresponding mental activities. It is called "arising from giving" because it is the nature of giving, just as something is called "a hut arising from leaves." The same should be understood for the following as well. Therefore, it is said in the commentary: When a virtuous person, with a virtuous mind, gives away their possessions, at that time, the collection of virtues is called giving. Therefore, since the actions of body and speech are accompanied by arising and corresponding mental activities, it is the five aggregates. Therefore, in the Compendium of Topics, it is also said: What is the action of giving? It should be understood through its basis, arising, object, and nature. The basis is non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance. The arising is the mind that corresponds with these. The object is the object to be given. The nature is the actions of body and speech when giving. The result of giving is having great wealth. The divisions are: Giving for one's own benefit is when (an Arya) is not separated from desire, or when an ordinary person, separated from desire through the worldly path, gives to a stupa. (Because it benefits oneself but not the stupa.) Giving for the benefit of others, other than experiencing it in this lifetime, is when an Arya, separated from desire, gives to other sentient beings, which is also (transcending desire, but the ripening of giving is encompassed by desire, so it benefits others but not oneself.) Giving for the benefit of both is when an Arya is not separated from desire, or when an ordinary person, separated from desire, gives to other sentient beings. (This is also for accumulating one's own merit, for benefiting the sources of oneself and others.) Giving for the sake of not benefiting either is when an Arya, separated from desire from the desire realm, offers to a stupa, other than experiencing it in this lifetime, (because there is no benefit to oneself or the stupa in the future, so offering to it is) merely respect and repaying kindness.

It is for the sake of offering. (There is no contradiction in experiencing the visible Dharma.) The excellence of that generosity lies in the three distinctions of the giver, the object, and the field. For the time being, the excellence of the giver lies in possessing the seven noble riches of faith and so forth, which are taken by ethics, giving, hearing, knowing shame, being ashamed, and wisdom, and having little desire and contentment. The way is, as the sutra says: Monks, the generosity of a noble person is of five kinds. What are the five? Giving with faith, giving with respect, giving from one's own hand, giving at the right time, and giving without harming others. The wise give with respect and from their own hands, giving at the right time without harming others. The giver's generosity is vast and great, and great fortune will arise. It is said that in the commentary: Respect, and what is included by etc., giving with one's own hand, at the time of near need, and with that basis not harming others (such as giving a stolen sheep to a butcher or hunter, or food that is poisonous and unsuitable harming the field), giving without harming others. Thus, the four other than faith are explained. The fruit is that because of giving with respect and so forth, giving with respect, in the next life one will be respected and served by one's retinue, and one will obtain, giving with one's own hand, one will trust in great enjoyment, that is, one will become independent and wealthy, giving at the time of near need, one will obtain when one needs it, giving without harming others, one's enjoyment will be obtained without obstacles such as being burned by enemies and fire. Here, harming others means taking what has not been given to the other and giving it away. In the Sutra of Five Names and Five, it says: Many kinds are complete and, giving without stinginess, the ripening of many kinds is enjoyed separately, therefore, the completeness of color and what is indicated by etc., the completeness of smell, taste, and touch are the excellence of things. Giving color completeness and so forth, in the next life one's own appearance will be good, one will have a good reputation, and one's mind will be very
