In the past, my fathers and grandfathers gave alms because of giving alms, for the sake of the heavenly realm, for the sake of fame, for the sake of the adornment of the mind, for the sake of the equipment of the mind, for the sake of the assembly of yoga, and for the sake of attaining the supreme meaning. Thus, they spoke of eight kinds of giving, among which the eighth, giving for the sake of the adornment of the mind and so on, is the most excellent. Giving to those who are close is what former teachers said: giving to those who have not been close but have become close, and to those who have come close. Giving out of fear is seeing destruction directly and then saying, "I give the excellent thing." Giving because I have been given to is giving with the thought, "This person gave to me before." The others are easy to understand. The adornment of the mind is magical power. The equipment of the mind is the eightfold noble path. The assembly of yoga is calm abiding and special insight. The supreme meaning is seeing an Arhat or Nirvana, so the king's son, whose name is "Friend of Fame," explains. What does the teacher Gampopa add? The four, beginning with the meaning of the adornment of the mind, are in order to lead to wealth such as faith, to contradict the defilement of stinginess, to generate the bliss of equipoise, and to lead to Nirvana. The earth element says that with an undefiled mind, the supreme meaning is dedicated to Nirvana, the assembly of yoga is transformed into a collection of causes for Nirvana, the adornment of the mind goes to a good rebirth, and the equipment of the mind also transforms into great enjoyment. Alternatively, the four, beginning with the adornment of the mind, are related in order to the accumulation path, the seeing path, the path of meditation, and Nirvana. Or, they are related to the accumulation path, the first seven bhumis, the three pure bhumis, and the Buddha bhumis. Then why are the previous seven kinds of giving inferior? The earth element says that the first seven are in order giving impaired by laziness, fear due to poverty in this life and the next, giving out of desire for power, observing the past, rejoicing in the future, despising the object of giving, desiring the enjoyment of the heavenly realm, and...

It is said to be inferior because of the faults of desiring fame and so on. Furthermore, in the Sutra Requested by the Elder, it is said that one should abandon the thirty-two impure giving and cultivate the excellent pure giving. These are as follows: Giving with a reversed view and without faith; giving in order to repay a favor; giving inferior things; giving fire and flames for the sake of desire; giving water; giving to a king in order to fully understand oneself; giving to robbers and so on out of fear; giving poison; giving weapons; killing living beings and giving meat; giving alcohol to the reckless; thinking, "These will become mine, and will become my service and offerings." Giving in order to gather and obtain sentient beings; giving for the sake of speech, sound, and verses; giving to musicians for the sake of dance, song, laughter, play, talk, and joy; giving to astrologers for the sake of astrological signs; giving to the managers of others' wealth; rejoicing in the eating of grain piles by wild animals and birds in others' fields; giving for the sake of craftsmanship; giving to doctors out of fear of bodily discomfort; scolding beggars and making them angry before giving; giving while doubting whether giving has good results; suffering from grief and regret after giving; giving with the thought that whatever is taken from me will be given back to me in the next life; giving with the thought that I myself will enjoy the fruits of the merit of giving, and may no other sentient being receive it; giving because of youth; in the sorrow of old age, sickness, and death, without joy and faith in the Buddha, but allowing the limbs to act and then giving to the object of giving; giving for the sake of fame, thinking, "In another place, I will become a famous benefactor"; giving because one sees that people who are unwilling to give food are disliked by the world.
