It is like what is said (in the sutra), one should expect to receive a thousandfold return when giving. (Going with the good.) The case of the field being particularly excellent due to suffering is that, among the bases for performing merit arising from material things, giving at times of sickness, nursing the sick, and cold, etc., is merit arising from material things, so it is like what is said (in the sutra), it is immeasurable merit. The case of the field being particularly excellent due to suffering and helping is that, whether it is parents or other helpers, one can use the stories of the births of bears and deer, etc. (such as helping oneself) as examples. The case of the field being particularly excellent due to qualities is that, in the Gautama Sutra, it says: If one gives to one who possesses discipline, one should expect a hundred thousandfold return. If one gives to one who has entered the stream-enterer's fruit, the result is immeasurable. Even more so, if one gives to a stream-enterer, the result is even more immeasurable. It is like what is said (in the sutra). (Having qualities, that is, these four make the field particularly excellent.) In the Sutra on Showing the Causes and Effects of Good and Bad, it says: If one gives alms to a monk who possesses discipline, one will obtain a return worth a million. The word "all" is a plural word, referring to those four fields. Among all giving, the most excellent is giving to those who are liberated by those who are liberated from the three realms, because it is particularly excellent, because there is no fault in it. Therefore, in the Gautama Sutra, it says: Whoever restrains body and speech, is self-controlled, extends his hand and practices begging, gives to the desireless by the desireless, this is the best of material giving. It is also said in the scripture: Whatever giving is given by the desireless to the desireless, that is the most excellent among all material giving. Furthermore, whatever the giver, the Bodhisattva, gives for the benefit of all sentient beings, even if the unliberated give to the unliberated, it is excellent because it is given for the sake of complete enlightenment and the benefit of all sentient beings, because it is the giving that becomes the protector of all sentient beings. Furthermore, the sutra says: Giving to a fisherman, giving out of fear, giving out of self, giving because one will give to oneself, and
