We arise from meditation. Why is it called meditation? (Like the scent of sesame oil and flowers,) because it cultivates virtuous imprints on the mind, making them habitual and controllable. So, among those arising from discipline and meditation, which is more important? The Four Hundred Verses states: 'Through discipline, one goes to higher realms; through view, one goes to the supreme state.' As it says, discipline is more important for attaining higher realms. Since what is to be abandoned on the path of non-interruption is actually abandoned, meditation is more important for separating from afflictions. Therefore, desiring these, one should rely on them accordingly. Since calm abiding and insight arise from relying on discipline, saying which is more or less important, both are actually the cause of both. Therefore, in the Sutra Requested by the Son of Gods, Excellent Intellect, it says: 'Not abandoning generosity, the cause of great wealth; not abandoning discipline, the cause of being born in higher realms; not abandoning listening, the cause of great wisdom; not abandoning meditation, the cause of separation.' And, 'The cause of great wealth is not abandoning generosity, that is its result; the cause of being born in higher realms is not abandoning discipline, that is its result; the cause of wisdom destroying afflictions is listening, that is its result; the cause of attaining liberation is practicing meditation, that is its result.' Those wise ones who diligently examine these four causes, day and night, act for the sake of the fruit of empowerment into the heart of enlightenment. And also in the Uttaratantra, it says: 'Because generosity accomplishes all enjoyments, discipline leads to higher realms, meditation abandons afflictions, and wisdom abandons all afflictions and objects of knowledge, therefore this is supreme, and its cause is listening.' Thus it is taught. So, the sutra says: 'Four people generate the merit of Brahma: building a stupa for the relics of the Tathagata in a place where it has not been built, this is the first person to generate the merit of Brahma.' Similarly, offering parks to the Sangha of the four directions and building temples in them, as well as reconciling a hundred thousand disciples of the Tathagata, and also practicing immeasurable love, are also taught in connection with this. Such merit of Brahma is equal to the lifespan of the leader of Brahma (in the middle

In order to enjoy happiness in the heavens for (forty) kalpas, the merit of Brahma of the four kinds of people who build stupas of relics, etc., in places that have not been done before, as mentioned earlier, is like this. Here, Brahma refers to the Brahma leader whose life can last for a kalpa. Other sectarian scriptures also say: Accumulating the merit of Brahma, one enjoys happiness in the heavens in a kalpa. This is the view of ancient teachers. Therefore, the teacher Ocean Cloud also said: The measure of Brahma's merit is, with what merit one can go to the heavens in a kalpa, and the merit that matures repeatedly and continuously is called Brahma's merit, which is the same as the merit of the beings of the first dhyana heaven. Other verses say: If the Sangha is in harmony, one will obtain happiness in the heavens in a kalpa. The Vaibhashikas say that the merit of Brahma is a karma with excellent fruition, and it is the fruit of enjoyment for all beings except those who abide in it. Some say. In any case, Brahma or similar to the merit of being born in Brahma, therefore it is the merit of Brahma, which continues to grow in the desire realm heavens and experience happiness in forty intermediate kalpas. Some say that great merit is called Brahma's merit. By the way, regarding the giving of Dharma, the giving of Dharma is not afflicted with desires such as greed for profit and respect, so the taught sutras, etc. (chanting, prophecy, recitation, great events, narratives, Jataka tales, wonderful events, discussions, such births, extremely vast, wonderful, definitive sections), the twelve parts of the scriptures or the three pitakas, are declared truthfully and without error with the correct combination. Among them, the first division of the scriptures into twelve parts is to make it easy for those who like concise objects of taming to learn and tell, easy to grasp, to complete the Sangha with respect for the Dharma, to quickly realize the nature of Dharma, and to cherish the Three Jewels.
