Regarding the explanation of discipline, the corrupted discipline refers to non-virtuous actions and non-contactable forms (i.e., actions of body and speech such as killing), as well as non-restraint. The discipline that protects against corrupted discipline is the virtue arising from discipline. Discipline is the antidote to both actions and non-actions that are to be abandoned, thus it is divided into two types: actions and non-actions. Although not inherently sinful, such as abstaining from untimely food, these are prohibitions taught by the Buddha, and abstaining from these actions and non-actions is also discipline. The complete purity of discipline is to possess four qualities. What are the four? Not being tainted by corrupted discipline, without generating faults; not being tainted by afflictions such as desire and near afflictions; relying on mindfulness as the antidote to corrupted discipline; and relying on peace by dedicating it to liberation. Others say that the complete purity of discipline is to possess five causes: being completely pure through the path of action itself, not being tainted by thoughts of killing, etc.; being completely pure through the accumulation of purity, not being tainted by actions of killing, etc.; not being tainted by thoughts of desire, etc., not being tainted by discriminations; the body being stabilized by mindfulness or being held by mindfulness, being completely held by mindfulness; and being completely dedicated to Nirvana. They say this. Others say that there are four types of discipline: discipline of fear, which is guarded out of fear of falling into bad states and bad destinies, not for livelihood, not for vows; discipline of good aspiration, which is guarded out of attachment to existence, enjoyment, and respect; discipline in accordance with the limbs of enlightenment, which is guarded for the sake of liberation by those who have entered the Buddha's teachings and have right view; and discipline of complete purity, which is without defilement and without outflows. They explain it this way. Explaining the virtue arising from meditation, the virtue arising from the mind's equal abiding on the object of focus, because it is not equally abiding and is not born of afflictive meditation, is associated with samadhi.
