It is said, do not say it is completely eradicated. The reason is that the four opponent powers are incomplete, which is what the holy ones say. Furthermore, it is said in the same scripture: What is the action that is initially happy but later becomes painful? Some people are very happy and joyful when they give alms, but later regret it after giving. This is because they enjoy happiness in the first half of their life, but later their wealth declines and is exhausted, becoming painful. What is the action that is initially painful but later becomes happy? It is painful to give alms, but after giving alms, one does not regret it, but feels happy and joyful. This refers to people who are born into poverty but later increase in wealth and become happy. What is the action that is initially happy and later also happy? When giving alms, one gives it with joy in their heart and does not regret it after giving. What is the action that is initially painful and later also becomes painful? It is because one is separated from a virtuous friend, so one does not give any alms and does not commit any sins. What is the action of becoming rich and generous? It is giving immeasurable alms in a good field. What is the action of becoming rich but stingy? It is giving only a little alms in a good field. Because one has offered in a good field, one becomes happy, but because one has not become accustomed to giving, one becomes stingy. What is the action of being poor but generous? It is giving a lot of alms in a bad field. Because one's merit is exhausted, one becomes poor, but because one has become accustomed to giving in the past, one becomes generous. What is the action of becoming poor and stingy? In the past, because one was separated from a virtuous friend, one did not give any alms. Furthermore, the Compendium of Topics also speaks of two types of actions, common and uncommon. The first is what forms the vessel world, and the second is what forms the sentient being world. Similarly, two types of actions, inconceivable and conceivable, are also spoken of. The first is that by means of contaminated virtuous actions, one obtains a good rebirth, and by means of non-virtuous actions, one is born into the three lower realms, and so on. The second is that only this action can form the bodies of sentient beings

That which can be accomplished, and the accomplishment of various external things, and the power of jewels, mantras, and medicines, and the actions of union and the miraculous actions of yogis, and the powerful actions of bodhisattvas, and the activities of the Buddhas' accomplishments. These are mostly unthinkable except by the Buddhas themselves. Among the divisions of the Mahasamghika school, such as the Eastern and Western Mountain schools, it is said that if one offers to a stupa with attachment, it is giving for one's own sake, which is unreasonable. How can offering to a stupa produce merit? Because there is no receiver or enjoyer, this is said to be unreasonable. Although they do not have the merit arising from a receiver or enjoyer, by the power of the mind, merit will arise from the cause of offering to a stupa. For example, like the immeasurable love of wishing all beings to be happy, and meditating on the correct view, although there is no receiver and no actual giving to others, immeasurable merit will arise by the power of one's own mind. Therefore, there are two kinds of merit arising from giving: that arising from enjoyment and that arising from the cause of giving. Among these, offering to a stupa and so on only has the merit arising from the cause of giving. Giving to a noble being with or without attachment, who is born in the desire realm, has both. If it is said that the result of giving to a good field, such as those who benefit others, is reasonably a pleasing result of maturation, then giving to a bad field, such as animals, will not become a pleasing result of maturation. Because the pleasing result of maturation arises from a virtuous cause without fail, even giving to a bad field, the result of maturation will only be pleasing. However, due to the power of the bad field, the result of maturation will become small or disappear, just as the fruit planted in a bad field will not ripen on time or become small, and so on. These have explained the basis for the activity of merit arising from giving. The basis for the activity of merit arising from ethics.
