It is explained that whatever is to be understood is consciousness, and this shows that one should not grasp what is known merely by seeing, etc., as true and characterized by loveliness and unloveliness. Other teachers of the former Yogacara school say that what is manifestly done only by the eye is seeing. What is heard by the ear and what comes from others are both hearing. What is thought by oneself is cognition. What is known separately and correctly because one has not equally abided by oneself, and what is known by worldly samadhi, is consciousness. Thus, according to the former view, each of the five objects can be given the names of seeing, hearing, cognition, and consciousness, while dharma is given names other than seeing. According to the latter view, each of the six objects can be given the four names of seeing, etc., as appropriate, so there is no fault of not being able to give names to the three, such as smell.

Then, if there is no expression when ascetics are angry and fasting, then non-expression will also not exist, because the desired non-expression must depend on expression. Therefore, if it is thought that killing with intention and lying cannot be established as paths of action, then the Vaibhashikas must answer this question. To this, the teacher Sudatta says that even when ascetics are angry and fasting, the expression of body and speech is not non-existent. Because non-humans who believe in ascetics, with the bodily expression of harming beings, cause those ascetics to generate paths of action; and when the ascetics themselves are angry with others, there must be movements of body and speech, such as curses, etc., of bodily and verbal expression; when fasting, although they do not speak, they do so to let others know that they are pure; or they introduce a completely impure person into the Sangha, let him sit, show his behavior, and say a few words related to it, these are his expressions, therefore the sign is not established. Others answer that even if those have no expression, it is not certain that all desired non-expressions must depend on expression, for example, the five aggregates, etc., when attaining the result, even if there is no expression, the Pratimoksha vows arise, similarly, some unwholesome non-expressions may also arise without expression, therefore your reason is uncertain. Furthermore, if one kills by cursing with speech, or lies by signaling with the body, then the non-expression included by the object is only of body and speech respectively, because they are respectively the actions of body and speech. The teacher, the King's Son, said so. Divisive speech is speech uttered with a disturbed mind in order to divide others and make them unfriendly, that is, the meaning of the words is clear and easy to understand and without error, and this should also be understood here. If one speaks the truth, it is only divisive speech; if one speaks falsely, it is both divisive speech and lying.

Harsh speech, instigated by afflictions, refers to speech that expresses unpleasantness. That is, it is spoken to others, and they understand the meaning clearly. Furthermore, it is spoken without error about what one intends to say; this is harsh speech. All speech, such as lies, that is instigated by an afflicted mind is mere idle talk. Therefore, although all three, such as lies, are idle talk, they are separated out because their faults are greater; this is the view of some teachers. Other former teachers say that any afflicted speech other than the three actions of speech, such as lies, is idle talk. For example, a mendicant with wrong livelihood speaks flattering words, a lustful person sings, and entertainers utter idle words in order to please others. Also, clinging to the views of outsiders and reciting their evil treatises, as well as lamentations other than the three, such as lies, and noisy talk, etc., all speech instigated by an afflicted mind is idle talk. Then, when a wheel-turning king appears in the world, there will also be idle talk, because they sing. If so, then at that time they would not have abandoned the ten non-virtues? If asked this, then at that time they are not accompanied by songs and lamentations that are accompanied by a mind that is certain to arise from samsara. Some say that even at that time, there are expressions of songs and marriage ceremonies, etc., so although there is idle talk, those (because there is no non-brahmacharya) are not paths of action. These are the four actions of speech. Covetousness is the desire to possess the wealth of others, wishing that it would become one's own, whether through force, deception, or other means; in short, wanting to take it as one's own in an improper way, this is attachment to the wealth of others. Another teacher says that all craving that indulges in desire is covetousness. In the Vinaya Pitaka, when explaining the five obscurations, he (the Buddha) made the desire for desire the object of obscuration, therefore, he said that in the world, abandoning covetousness, one abides many times with a mind free from covetousness, and in the world, one is free from harmful thoughts.
