Because the doctor did not see the mistake and gave medicine, which caused the patient to die, and the mother beat the child to discipline him, which caused the child to lose his life, and the creature unwillingly fell into the burning fire, it is said that these five are the causes. Mistakenly killing and suicide only constitute the act of killing, but in reality, they are not. The former is because the intention is not completed, and the latter is because a new body has already been produced when it is completed. What is called "life"? It refers to the breath that depends on the body and mind, the temperature that is not confused with consciousness, the existence that is of the same kind as consciousness, and the root of life. Killing to cut off these is killing. As the sutra says, "When life, temperature, and consciousness abandon this body, after abandoning it, what remains at that time is like a tree without consciousness." (If one hesitates and thinks about what to kill and kills, this is also real.) Not giving is taking away the property that others possess, or secretly taking it as one's own without being noticed. (When an object appears, and the thought of taking it as one's own arises, it becomes an actual act.) Here, it should also be known that it is intentional and without error. Because there is no fault in unintentionally taking another's property among one's own property. Mistakenly taking another's property only constitutes a fault in action, but it does not actually happen. Then, if one steals the property of a stupa or digs up treasure (and takes the property of the dead, from where would it constitute not giving?), it would not constitute not giving because it is not owned by others. It is not so, because the property of the stupa is owned by the Buddha and the guardians of the stupa, and the treasure is owned by the ruler of the place. Taking the property of the dead, if it is a householder, it is owned by the relatives, and if it is a renunciate, it is owned by the Sangha, so taking it from them would constitute not giving. Regarding this, if the final ceremony or prayer is performed first, it would constitute not giving from the Sangha within the boundary, and if it is not performed, it would constitute not giving from all the disciples of the Buddha, because the Vinaya

In the Root Text of Karma, it says, "The possessions of the deceased, for whom no prayers or initial and final rites have been performed, shall belong to all disciples of the Buddha." Therefore, there are four ways of engaging in what should not be engaged in due to desire, and four types of sexual misconduct due to desire: engaging in what is not the proper place, non-limbs, improper locations, and improper times. The first of these refers to women who are possessed by others, as well as mothers, daughters, parents, and those related within seven generations. Among these, nuns are completely possessed by the local lord, and young women are possessed by the one to whom they are given. If there is no giver, then they are possessed by their parents, brothers, and so on. If there is no other protector, they are even possessed by the king, and thus belong to those possessed by others. The *Nirnaya-samgraha* and the *Smrtyupasthana-sutra* state that men, hermaphrodites, and animals, etc., should also not be engaged with. The second refers to engaging in sexual acts in places other than the mouth and excretory passage, such as wounds. Even with one's own wife, this becomes sexual misconduct, let alone with others. The *Nirnaya-samgraha* states, "Among these, moderation is doing it up to five times, and more than that is immoderate." Therefore, exceeding five times becomes immoderate, or it becomes five times. Or, in the same sutra, it says, "Exceeding that limit is called improper time." Therefore, it is also explained as belonging to improper time. The third refers to engaging in sexual acts in places with light, in the presence of many people, in uneven and fragile places that are harmful to it, in stupas and temples, in front of one's parents, teachers, gurus, and monks, etc. Even engaging in sexual acts with one's own wife becomes sexual misconduct. The fourth refers to times such as when one's wife is pregnant, breastfeeding, afflicted with a disease that makes sexual intercourse inappropriate, unhappy due to grief, during the day, and on fasting days. At these times, even with one's own wife, it becomes sexual misconduct. Here, too, it should be known that one should not err, because if one errs, there is no fault. (If one is a renunciate,
