In order to manifest the mind of anger, it is perfected by anger. Adultery with desire, greed, and taking what is not given are all perfected by attachment. False views are extreme ignorance, and false views are perfected by delusion. The remaining lies, divisive speech, and idle talk are considered to be perfected and completed by the three, namely desire, etc., each according to its appropriate share. Third, explaining the basis, the basis of the four, such as perfecting with hatred, are, in order, sentient beings to be killed, etc., enjoyments to be touched, etc., and slandering all five aggregates, therefore it is name and form, and lies, etc. are speech, and speech belongs to name, therefore it is name. Or, just as the basis of harsh speech is sentient beings, so are the three, namely lies, etc., and just as the basis of the three is name, so is harsh speech, thus mutually indicating, so it is said. Here, the word "basis" refers to the support or object, because killing, etc., is directed towards sentient beings, adultery, etc., is directed towards enjoyment, false views slander all five aggregates, and lies, etc., are speech, and that speech belongs to name. A special explanation is given for killing, that is, if someone determines that another will surely die, and he himself dies before the other dies, simultaneously with the other, or together with the killer, then this will not be touched by the act of killing, because there is no actual path of action and no result arises. If the one to be killed has not died, then the fault of killing should not arise, but when he dies, the killer also dies, because the result matures on the body by which the action was done, so at the time of the severance of life, the body of the actor (unequal to this) has already produced another body. (In that transformation, the principal must be accomplished by the one who performed the action.) Therefore, in the sutra it says: Even if the action has been done and the result has been completely perfected, is there a case where one is not touched by the fault of killing? The answer is: Yes, such as when the killer dies first or dies together. Then, many

When people gather and discuss, engaging in activities like war and hunting, if one person actually causes the death of a sentient being, do the others also possess the act of killing, and so on? Activities like war and hunting involve engaging in a single purpose to kill sentient beings. Therefore, all those who are not actual killers also possess the actual path of killing, just like the actual killer. Then, if someone is forcibly led, do they possess the path of action? Even if they are in a group like an army, if they are determined that even if it costs their own life, they will not kill others, then they will not be recognized as a killer. However, if there is no such determination, then they will possess it. Fourth, explaining the essence: Killing is to kill while thinking "I will kill this," without mistake, and possessing the three conditions of killing another life. The term "thinking" is to refute the naked ascetics. Just as touching fire burns even without thinking of being burned, they say that unintentionally killing a creature underfoot, or cutting down a tree without sentient awareness, also possesses the fault of killing, which is incorrect. If merely causing the condition of death without the intention to kill becomes killing, then parents would possess the sin of killing when their children die, because their very act of giving birth causes the condition of death. Similarly, if doctors misuse medicine, or patrons offer too much food, causing a monk to die, then the doctors and patrons would also possess the sin of killing. If it is said that they do not have the intention to kill, then that is precisely why it is said "thinking." For this very reason, it is said in the Sutra on Mindfulness: Killing caused by five reasons will not be tainted by fault. For example, walking on the road and unknowingly causing the death of tiny creatures and ants; or throwing a weapon at someone but unintentionally hitting another, causing their death; or a doctor wanting to benefit a patient.
