Sixth, the division of the ten virtues and ten non-virtues. Sixth, the division of the ten virtues and ten non-virtues. Sixth, the division of the ten virtues and ten non-virtues is briefly explained as follows: From those misdeeds and good deeds, a rough summary is made, and it is said that there are ten paths of virtuous actions and also ten paths of non-virtuous actions. It is said that only a rough outline of virtue and non-virtue is summarized, not all, because some are omitted. What has not been summarized? For the time being, the preparatory and concluding stages of the three non-virtuous physical actions, as well as the afflictive physical actions such as unchaste conduct, beating, and binding, etc., are not summarized. As a preparatory act of killing, drawing blood from the Tathagata with malicious intent in the five inexpiable crimes, and destroying stupas in the five proximate crimes are also not summarized, and minor verbal actions are also not summarized. Mental actions such as the nine types of anger, as well as shamelessness and non-virtuous thoughts, are also not summarized. Similarly, on the virtuous side, the preparatory and concluding stages of the seven virtuous physical actions, as well as virtuous physical actions such as not drinking alcohol and abstaining from afternoon meals, etc., as well as giving and offerings, etc., as well as speaking pleasantly and praising, etc., and virtuous mental thoughts, conscientiousness, and faith, etc., are also not summarized. A detailed explanation is divided into seven aspects: manifestation and non-manifestation, motivation, basis, essence, path of action, simultaneous arising of mind, the manner of being endowed, and the explanation of the result. The first aspect is that among these paths of action, the six non-virtuous actions of killing, stealing, and the four verbal actions are of the nature of non-manifestation when causing others to act. This is because even causing others to act becomes a path of action for oneself, and because one does not have an actual manifestation. Only wrong desire is both one's own manifestation and non-manifestation. This is because that action becomes real only if done by oneself; it is not complete if caused by others. This is because one does not experience happiness from what others do. The six paths of action, such as killing, etc., if done by oneself and death, etc., occur at that time, then they become manifestation and

It also transforms into non-manifestation. (That is, in killing, if death occurs at the moment of contact, both are present; if death occurs later, it is only non-manifestation.) Even if done by oneself, if the sentient being dies later, it becomes only non-manifestation, because the actual deed has not occurred at the time of preparation, and there is no manifestation at the time of the actual deed. The three mental actions are neither manifestation nor non-manifestation. Virtuous actions, such as abandoning killing, etc., the seven corporeal paths of action of body and speech, under the control of properly taken vows, because they are received from others, are both manifestation and non-manifestation. Abandoning killing, etc., arising from meditative concentration and uncontaminated samadhi, the seven included in discipline, because they rely solely on the mind in equipoise, are only non-manifestation. The preparations for those seven paths of virtuous and non-virtuous action, i.e., the preliminary actions, are necessarily of the nature of manifestation, because they are of the nature of body and speech. That preliminary action, if initiated by intense afflictions or extreme joy, can also become non-manifestation. However, if the preliminary action is initiated without intense motivation, it becomes only manifestation and not non-manifestation. Therefore, because it is not definite, it is said to be 'an imagined sound' or similar. The nature of non-manifestation, which is the opposite of the preliminary action, is certain, and whether it becomes manifestation or not is the conclusion of the path of action. How so? If, after performing the path of action, one abandons the dharma that accords with it, then it also becomes manifestation, but if one does not practice it, then it becomes only non-manifestation. What is the difference between preparation, the actual deed, and the conclusion? For example, if someone wants to kill a living being, gets up from a bed, etc., goes to that living being, etc., from taking up a weapon and striking once or twice, up to the point of not actually killing, is preparation. The striking with which one actually kills is manifestation.
