They consider non-manifestation to be of seven natures. Furthermore, without non-manifestation, the vows of individual liberation would not be continuous, because the thoughts of manifestation and abandonment would disappear when the mind is distracted by other things or in a state of mindlessness. Moreover, the sutra says that abandonment is like a dam because it obstructs immoral conduct, so without abandonment, it should not be like a dam. In the Sutra on Mindfulness, it also says: When one possesses the activity of all dharmas and has taken the vows, from that time onward, even if one sleeps, is intoxicated, or is extremely intoxicated, the continuum of virtuous dharmas will continue to increase. For example, just as a river flows continuously without interruption, so too is the state of a person who sleeps or is extremely intoxicated. Therefore, they believe that non-manifestation is invisible and unobstructed. Therefore, they say that non-manifestation exists as form. Regarding this point, the Sautrāntikas and others believe that non-manifestation is not the nature of form itself, because it does not possess the characteristics of form, such as being obstructive. If it is considered form because it arises from form, then eye consciousness and so on would also become form. It should be clearly understood that the intention of the sutra is merely to not abide in the true meaning. The so-called invisible and unobstructed form refers to the appearances of exhaustion, suppression, and ugliness, etc., seen by meditators in their samadhi, which are forms included in the dharma-sphere, and are therefore nominally designated as form. Similarly, it is also called unpolluted form. The reason why the dharma-sphere does not speak of non-form is also the same. To illustrate with an example, the statement of unpolluted form refers to the form of an Arhat and the external forms that appear to them, because it is not a basis for defilements. If the sutra says: What are the dharmas associated with defilements? They are the eye and whatever forms there are. Then, this should be explained as referring to the eye and forms that are not antidotes to defilements, and are therefore called defiled. The increase of merit also depends on the differences of place, intention, and object.

This refers to speaking with the power of the transformation of karmic imprints. It also refers to the mind that causes one to engage in paths of action not yet taken, as well as the fact that obtaining a firm imprint of sin through the actions of body and speech and the conditions created by others is the nature of things. That is the intended meaning. The explanation of the Noble Eightfold Path is that when one arises from samadhi through the power of samadhi, one obtains the ability to refrain from lying and so forth, which is why it is explained as the eightfold path. The vows are considered to be the continuum of mind held by mindfulness and awareness. The term "water-born" is used because when what is to be abandoned is near, one remembers the vows due to shame, and abandons improper conduct through the application of antidotes. If non-manifestation alone could prevent improper conduct, then it would be impossible for there to be a breach of discipline due to forgetfulness and so on, they would say. However, the Vaibhashikas assert that it exists as form. If non-manifest form exists as a substance and is also considered to be caused by the four great elements, then does it arise only from the elements that produce manifestation, or does it arise from elements other than those that produce manifestation? Because non-manifestation is unobservable and without beginning, it is subtle, while manifestation is the opposite and is coarse. It is contradictory for a single aggregate of the four elements to produce both subtle and coarse results, so it arises from elements other than those that produce manifestation. Then, does non-manifestation arise from elements that are simultaneous with itself or from elements that are different in time? If it is the non-manifestation of the desire realm, then apart from the non-manifestation practiced in the desire realm, manifestation, the vows of undefiled concentration, and all internal and external forms arise only from the elements that are simultaneous with themselves. The non-manifestation belonging to the desire realm, which includes vows, non-vows, and the intermediate, the first moment arises from the elements that are simultaneous, co-emergent, and present with itself. As the master Prince Royal said: The non-manifestation practiced in the desire realm arises from the great elements that arise together when vows and so forth are taken as the cause. Similarly, other non-manifestations also arise from those alone as the cause.
