So it is. The meaning of the scripture, "experiencing happiness is form," refers to the eyes of the heavens, and so on. "Experiencing suffering is mind and mental factors," refers to the painful faculties of the five aggregates of consciousness, because unpleasantness is not a result of maturation. "Experiencing neither happiness nor suffering" refers to non-associated formations, such as the life force. This is considered from the perspective of weak virtuous deeds, because strong mind and mental factors also experience happiness, and it is impossible for non-virtue to experience happiness, and because the unspecified has no maturation. Therefore, below there is the karma of experiencing equanimity. Other than in the desire realm, there is no instance where the maturation of the three karmas occurs simultaneously without precedence. Then, wouldn't it contradict the statement that virtue up to the third dhyana is the karma of experiencing happiness, and that agreeable maturation is virtue, because there is also the virtue of experiencing equanimity? These teachings refer to the majority of cases; a few exist, which is the conclusion. If those karmas are not the nature of feeling, how can they become experiencing happiness, and so on? Because it is the karma that causes the experience of happiness, it is named after the result as the karma of experiencing happiness, just as washing soda is called washing soda. Similarly, it should be said for experiencing suffering, and so on. First, explaining the nature of karma.
