It is for the sake of taking vows. The Vaibhashikas say that if one obtains vows only from ability, then beings such as humans and gods, who can transform between having and not having ability, will increase and decrease. If that were the case, then without a cause for obtaining and relinquishing vows, it would also become like that. The scholar says that just as the growth and withering of grass and the like do not cause vows to increase or decrease, so too, even if they transform, they will not change. If one argues that sentient beings exist before and after, while grass and the like do not, so they are not the same, then it is also the same because they will become non-existent after nirvana. Therefore, the previous reason is better.) The way to obtain non-vows is that those who are not vows, but are born into castes such as butchers, will obtain them merely by performing actions such as killing. Those born into other castes will obtain them by promising in front of kings and the like, "I will live by this livelihood." The way to obtain the intermediate is that the remainder of vows and non-vows, the intermediate non-revealing virtue, such as non-revealing virtue arising from matter and not arising from matter, such as fields; before eating, vowing to prostrate to the Three Jewels and doing so, such as continuously promising and vowing to the deity; prostrating and circumambulating with great joy and intense afflictions, such as virtuous deeds and beatings, etc.; like doing non-virtuous deeds, one obtains them from respectful thought and action. (Intermediate non-virtuous deeds, such as building a house for killing and giving it away, such as taking the lives of beings every day, and obtaining them from disrespectful actions such as beating with intense afflictions.) Now, explaining the causes for abandoning them, because this subdues the senses, it is the Vinaya of individual liberation, that is, the vows of the eight kinds of precepts except for the upavasatha, (first, as long as one lives,) after having taken them correctly, (later,) because of generating revealing actions that are contrary, in front of someone who cannot communicate, abandoning the training from the depths of one's heart; (whoever has taken the vows,) the basis is lost, and because the time for throwing it away is exhausted, death occurs; (whichever of male or female,) the basis is impaired, so the two characteristics of male and female appear at the same time; (the land disappears, the trees that depend on it disappear

(As mentioned before.) If the root-born precepts are severed, then the precepts arising from practice will also be lost. Therefore, the root of virtue is severed and abandoned through four means. The upavāsa (one-day observance) is abandoned through those means and also through the passing of the night, just as the force of an arrow is exhausted because the time for shooting has run out. From the *Viniścayasaṃgraha*, it is said that the upāsaka (layman's vow) and upavāsa are abandoned even by merely giving rise to an unpleasant thought. Some, such as the Sautrāntikas and the Haimavatas, say that if any of the root downfalls occur, such as killing a human being or a fetus, stealing property of complete value, engaging in unchaste conduct, or falsely claiming to possess superhuman qualities, then all the vows are abandoned. Other schools, the red-robed ones, believe that if the holy Dharma disappears, all the training precepts and the limits of actions will vanish, and therefore they also believe that the vows are abandoned when the holy Dharma disappears. The teacher Kuche believes that because one cannot take vows after the holy Dharma has disappeared, it is not that they are abandoned, but that they do not arise. As the *Viniścayasaṃgraha* says: When the holy Dharma disappears, those who have not previously taken the vows of bhikṣu, etc., cannot take them, but those who have previously taken them should know that they are not completely abandoned. And the commentary also says: When the holy Dharma disappears, because there is no discipline (because there was none before), one cannot obtain discipline, but what has already been obtained is not abandoned. Some say that if this were the case, because there are people who possess the vows of bhikṣu, etc., the holy Dharma would not disappear, so the first two views are better. The Kashmir Vaibhāṣikas, a branch of the Sarvāstivāda, believe that if any of the root downfalls occur, one is considered to have both morality (śīla) from the aspect of possessing the vows, and immorality (duśśīla) from the aspect of abandoning them, like a person who has both debts and wealth. If one confesses that downfall, then one is only considered to have morality, just as paying off the debt makes one only wealthy. In this case, if one commits a root downfall of killing, there are two views: one is that all the parts of the vow to abstain from killing are abandoned, and the other is that not all are abandoned, but only the part of the vow related to the being that was killed is abandoned. How do we know these things? From the sūtras and
