The eight branches of the noble path are all blissful, leading to the state of peace and nirvana. The four noble truths of the noble ones are viewed with the eye of wisdom. That is the supreme refuge, that is the ultimate refuge, and by relying on that, one will be liberated from all suffering. Furthermore, why is abstaining from unchaste conduct established as a branch in other vows, while abstaining from sexual misconduct is established as a branch in the layperson's vow? Because engaging in sexual misconduct with desire harms the wives of others and is (uniquely) a cause for falling into the lower realms. Therefore, it is highly condemned in the world, and it is easy for householders to abandon. Even if noble ones give up their lives, they can obtain the vow of not engaging in sexual misconduct. Therefore, it is taught that abstaining from sexual misconduct is part of the layperson's vow. (Because it is difficult for householders to abandon and is likely to occur) Unchaste conduct is not like that. For novices and others, it is taught to abandon what is difficult to abandon in order to learn gradually. If a layperson engages in sexual misconduct with someone who is not his own wife, then if a layperson who previously had no wife later takes one, or if the previous wife dies and he takes a new one, the vow will be broken, because at the time of taking the vow, he also vowed not to engage in sexual misconduct. If you ask this, then the layperson's vow is obtained at the time of taking it, as one truthfully promises not to engage in sexual misconduct, but it is not a promise or attainment from the continuum that one will not engage in desire in this continuum. Therefore, when those women have not become the wives of the layperson, engaging with them is considered sexual misconduct, but it is not so when they have become wives, because it is engaging with one's own wife. Furthermore, why is it that lying, slander, harsh speech, and frivolous talk are not different in terms of non-virtuous actions of speech, but only abstaining from lying becomes a branch of the vow? Because if one says that all the trainings, such as abstaining from killing, have been transgressed, then it would be said that you have committed these downfalls. If one does not mention abstaining from lying, it would be wrong to say that one has committed it when one has not. Although slander and the like should also be abandoned, there is no such need, so it is not mentioned. Similarly, lying

It should also be known that saying it is extremely base, and easy, not doing it is for the sake of obtaining. (It is also said in the Sutra: Once one transgresses one Dharma, abandons the other world, sentient beings speak falsehood, there is no evil that cannot be done here.) This should also be known to monks and so on. Furthermore, why is it that among the prohibited transgressions, only abstaining from alcohol is mentioned as its branch? Because the transgressions that the Buddha prohibited and prescribed, abstaining from intoxicants, is because by abstaining from it, one can protect other trainings such as abstaining from killing. If one does not abstain from intoxicants, (because that will cause one to lose memory and mindfulness,) other trainings will also be destroyed because of that. Here, the Sarvastivadins who uphold the Vinaya say that drinking alcohol is a sin by nature, because the Teacher allowed the Shakya patients (all other) prescribed transgressions, but did not allow drinking alcohol even with a blade of grass. Furthermore, drinking alcohol is a sin by nature, because the noble ones do not practice it even after death, just like killing and so on. Similarly, drinking alcohol is a sin by nature, because in the Vinaya Garland it is said to be a collection of bodily and verbal misconduct, and in the Joyful Sutra, it is said to be a bodily misconduct, just like killing and so on. Among them, the first comes from the Vinaya Minor Matters, where the attendant asked the Blessed One: Venerable, how should I serve the sick? The Blessed One replied: Attendant, except for sins by nature, one should use other things to treat the sick. Furthermore, it is also forbidden for the Shakya patients to drink alcohol. It is also said in the Vinaya Verse: For diseases of the mouth, in the depths of the throat, there is no fault in probing with a probe. If a doctor says it can be drunk, it should not be allowed even if life is at stake. Furthermore, it is said in the Vinaya Vibhanga: Monks, those who say that I am the Teacher should not drink intoxicants even with a blade of grass. They say so.
