If it is said that abandoning killing and returning from it, similarly, I, so-and-so by name, also from this time onwards until the end of my life, abandoning killing and returning from killing, etc., the teachings on the precepts would become meaningless. If it is said that one obtains the vows by saying, "Please receive the lay vows," but when teaching the precepts such as abandoning killing, it is like the vows of a monk being obtained through petition and four karmas, but it is still necessary to state the precepts. If it is said that the vows are (the five) all (being) guarded, then from the request of Mi Ningchen (a personal name), only practicing one aspect of abandoning killing, and the partial practice of abandoning killing and not taking what is not given, which are included by "etc.," and the partial practice of abandoning sexual misconduct and the other three, and the distinctions of the complete layperson who guards all four or five roots, how are they taught? The Vaibhashikas are (initially, all five are taken equally, but from that, one or two are lost, and they are concerned with guarding the remainder), for those who guard one, part, and complete, etc., they are taught as such, but in reality, all (initially) obtaining the five vows is the same. It is said that (because they think that abandoning one fundamental transgression will not abandon other vows, so saying that is unreasonable), for such a situation, requests and questions are also unreasonable, therefore, the intention of the sutra here is to know that from the beginning, one guards by taking one, etc. Furthermore, in the Vinayavibhaṅga, it says, "Fair-faced one, until the end of your life, in front of the Blessed One, take the fifth precept of celibacy," and it also speaks of the layperson who abandons non-celibacy, and "until the end of life, guarding the eight-branch fast is called the 'Gomi' layperson," and the Acharya Abhaya and other treatises also speak of the layperson who only takes the three refuges, and only during the day and only during the night. The vows of monks, etc., are small, and the medium and large, which are included by "etc.," are like the intention of truly taking them being small, medium, and large, respectively. Therefore, the enemy

Chompa thinks that even the vows of ordinary beings can be greater. If all vows are preceded by refuge, then what does one who takes refuge in the Three Jewels take refuge in? Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha, Sangha, and Dharma, respectively takes refuge in the path of no more learning, which causes Buddhahood; the path of both learning and no more learning, which causes Sanghahood; and Nirvana, which causes Dharmahood, i.e., their respective cessation through examination. The path of no more learning is the Dharmakaya of the Buddha, the Sangha of learning and no more learning causes beings to be divided into eight types, and Nirvana is the Dharma of cessation. Then, drawing blood from the body of the Buddha with malicious intent will not become an immediate crime, because the Dharmakaya cannot bleed. Is it because it harms its basis? Or is it said that the Dharmakaya is the main thing, otherwise the Rupakaya is the cause of Buddhahood. What is the meaning of taking refuge? It is the verbal expression together with the motivation, and the motivation is the desire to rely on it. In the commentary, it is also said: What is the nature of those who take refuge? It is the very nature of verbal expression. In the Tika, it says: This is in terms of the time of acceptance. From what does it protect? It protects from all suffering. In the commentary, it is also said: What is the meaning of refuge? It is because by relying on it, one is definitely and permanently liberated from all suffering. Therefore, it is superior to worldly refuge in terms of object, motivation, and action. The Minor Section of the Vinaya says: People frightened by fear mostly take refuge in mountains, forests, gardens, and trees in places of worship. That refuge is not the main one, that refuge is not supreme, and relying on that refuge does not liberate from all suffering. Whenever, whoever, has gone for refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and to suffering, the arising of suffering, and the true cessation of suffering
