Because it is said (in the scriptures), "Go to any Bhikshu or Brahmin to learn," so it is said that just knowing the ritual is enough. In the 'Compilation of Determinations', it is said that if there is no place (where the teacher is), one can take (the vows) oneself, (and it is also said) that one can keep the vows for life in one place. Why are there said to be eight branches? To abandon the naturally negative, there are the first four branches of morality; if one drinks alcohol, even if one has morality, one becomes reckless, so abandoning alcohol is a branch of mindfulness; similarly, to be in accordance with renunciation, there are the last three ascetic branches, corresponding in order. If taking the four vows such as not killing completes the morality, then why abandon alcohol etc.? Because drinking alcohol causes the antidote to abandonment—the mindfulness and awareness of what should and should not be done—to deteriorate; showing songs and dances etc. causes arrogance and pride, and for the arrogant, breaking the vows is not far off; if one does not abandon untimely food, the mindfulness of fasting and the mindfulness of renunciation will not arise. Therefore, these are taught as branches for protecting that morality. For those observing the vows, abandoning dances etc. and garlands etc. is made as one branch, while for novices, abandoning these is made as two branches, because for laypeople, these are not completely inconsistent with the rules, and if they violate these, it is enough to confess one fault, so it is lightened and combined into one branch. But for renunciants, these are inconsistent with the rules, and if they violate these, they need to confess two faults, so it is made heavier and made into two branches. Similarly, abandoning the acceptance of gold and silver is prescribed for renunciants because it is inconsistent with the rules, but it is not so for laypeople, so it is not prescribed, as stated in the 'Compilation of Determinations'. Some teachers say that in order to show it is easy for laypeople who think (the vows) are too many and become lazy, they are grouped into one, just like showing the training ground to the son of the herdsman. Why is it called fasting? Because through it one can be close to an Arhat, or because it is a lifelong discipline.

Because I am near! Or, the practice of Uposatha is the Sojong of the Upasakas, because of increasing virtue and purifying transgressions, this is called the eight-branch Sojong. As the Sutra says: 'Because the virtue of the mind is cultivated, therefore, the Blessed One said this is Uposatha.' Because it is said so! Then, does a non-Upasaka not have Uposatha? (If one takes refuge and then takes it,) Others besides Upasakas also have Uposatha, but those who have not taken refuge in the Three Jewels do not have it. Moreover, the commentary says: A non-Upasaka, if on that day, takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and receives the Uposatha, then the vows of Uposatha will arise for him, otherwise it will not. 'Except for those who do not know,' the meaning of 'except' is that the prince explains taking refuge (unknowingly) and to those who are immature. However, the teacher Gangpel, those who doubt the Three Jewels or do not take refuge with the intention of entering into wrong views, will not generate vows. If the giver and the receiver do not know that they must take refuge and do not take refuge, but it is not that they do not take refuge because of entering into wrong views or doubting, then even if they have not taken refuge, the vows of Uposatha will arise, as it is explained. Then, in the Sutra of Great Name, it says: Great Name, for example, a householder wearing white clothes, a man with male faculties, takes refuge in the Buddha, takes refuge in the Dharma and Sangha, and says, 'Please accept me as an Upasaka.' Just by saying these words, does he become an Upasaka? Is it just by taking refuge that one becomes an Upasaka? Some southerners say that he will become an Upasaka. (This is thinking about attainment.) The Kashmiris say that he will not become an Upasaka just by that (because the vows have not arisen, therefore), but because he has promised to be an Upasaka, these vows will arise. Therefore, that Sutra also says, 'Please accept me as an Upasaka,' which is precisely a promise. Then, please listen, teacher. How do the noble Arhats abstain from killing for the rest of their lives?
