That is, by accepting and upholding those two hundred and fifty-three precepts (or, abandoning the seven actions of the body), one becomes a Bhikṣu. The categories of names are: because unwholesome actions cause beings to act unequally, when taking vows, one can truly stop and abandon unequal actions. Or, as stated in the Sutra: "Because the body is completely without suffering, it is pleasant to take vows correctly. It is also pleasant to fall asleep, and it becomes pleasant when awake." Because there is no suffering of body and mind such as regret, one can obtain coolness, therefore it is called discipline, and because it is praised by the wise, it is called good conduct. Because it is the nature of action (because it is done by knowledge and mind), it is called karma, and because it can protect against the misconduct of body and speech, it is called restraint. Similarly, it is also called root, ornament, anointing, and incense. Furthermore, the first moment of the form and non-form when obtaining the Pratimoksha vows is also called Pratimoksha and vows (same basis) and the path of action (actual), because it liberates from sins (first), because it restrains body and speech, and because it is the gateway for the arising of karma. From the second moment onwards, it is only the Pratimoksha vows, not the Pratimoksha, because the meaning of Pratimoksha is Pratimokṣa (藏文:པྲ་ཏི་མོཀྵ་,梵文天城体:प्रतिमokṣa,梵文罗马拟音:pratimokṣa,汉语字面意思:个别解脱), if it is the initial liberation, then it is already liberated. It is the end of the path of action, but not the actual. (This is the discipline that is truly upheld, the undefiled meditation is obtained by nature.) Furthermore, there are eight types of individuals who possess the Pratimoksha vows, such as Bhikṣus. (Do the outsiders have Pratimoksha or not? If they do, then they only have the vows to restrain unwholesome actions, but they do not have the Pratimoksha vows, because they are defiled by wrong views, etc., and they think that only the difference of existence is liberation, so they rely on existence, therefore they can never be individually liberated from sins.) The third is the discipline arising from meditation, and those who possess it are in accordance with those who possess the dhyana-samvaras (preparatory stage and actual stage). (The preparatory stage is also said to be the basis.) And the noble beings (learners and non-learners) who are in accordance with the undefiled discipline.

And they possess. Among these three vows, the last two, the vows of samadhi and non-outflow, follow the mind, that is, they exist when in meditative equipoise and do not exist when not in equipoise. (The Pratimoksha does not follow distraction and mindlessness.) Furthermore, what is said to be the vow of abandonment? The samadhi and non-outflow vows that arise in the nine unobstructed paths are called the vows of abandonment. Are they all unobstructed paths? No, they are the preliminary practices of the first dhyana that are free from obstruction, because they abandon the immoral conduct and all the defilements that arise from it. Therefore, it is a vow of samadhi. That which is a vow of samadhi but not a vow of abandonment is the vow of samadhi with outflows, except for the unobstructed path that is free from obstruction. That which is a vow of abandonment but not a vow of samadhi is the vow of non-outflow of the unobstructed path of the preliminary practice. That which is both is the vow of samadhi of the unobstructed path of the preliminary practice that is free from obstruction. That which is neither is the vow of non-outflow other than that, other than the unobstructed path that is free from obstruction. These are the four possibilities. Similarly, one should understand the four possibilities of that which is a vow of non-outflow but not a vow of abandonment, and so forth. Furthermore, in the Pratimoksha it says: "Good is the discipline of the body! Good is the discipline of speech! Good is the discipline of the mind! Discipline is good in all respects!" And in the Sutra of the Aggregate of Discipline it says: "Whoever dwells restrained by the discipline of the eye faculty." Are those disciplines of mind and faculties, which are not disciplines of body and speech, also non-revealing forms? No, they are not, because mindfulness, which knows the transgressions and their antidotes, and the non-forgetting of the mind of abandonment, both are the discipline of the mind, and both are also the discipline of the faculties, because these two abandon the misdeeds of the mind and also abandon the faculties' wrong conduct towards objects. Showing the manner of possessing these is that a person abiding in the Pratimoksha, as long as he is not abandoned by the causes of abandonment that will be explained below, is always in the present state, which is a non-revealing form.
