I say that fruit is established by the name of common characteristic, just as pillars and eye consciousness are said to be cause and effect.) Secondly, the vows called Pratimoksha are of eight kinds when divided by individuals: Bhikshu parents, Shikshamana, Shramanera parents, Upasaka and Upasika, and the vows of Upavasa. (In the commentary on the "Letter to a Friend," Shikshamana is omitted, and Upavasa is divided into two, making eight.) Apart from the difference in individuals, there are four kinds of substance of vows: The vows of Bhikshu parents are of the same substance, and the three of Shikshamana and Shramanera parents are also of the same substance of vows, and Upasaka and Upasika are also (because the characteristics of what is to be abandoned, such as five, eight, and ten, are determined separately.) The substance of the vows is the same. Here, substance is understood as nature. (Among them, the first five vows are established by abandoning misconduct and unchaste conduct for as long as one lives, the vows of Upasaka are established by only being able to abandon misconduct and adultery for as long as one lives, and the vows of Upavasa are established by only being able to abandon misconduct and desire for one day.) The reason why Upavasa is not divided into two is because the time is short. (Because it is said in the Compendium that it also arises in food, etc.) If the substance of the vows of Bhikshu parents, etc., is the same, how can it be? Because the eight heavy dharmas of Bhikshuni are not prescribed for Bhikshus, and Shikshamana, in addition to the ten precepts of Shramanera (parents, also within two years) abandoning touching a man and living together with a man (in a secluded place with reliance), walking alone on the road, swimming, acting as a matchmaker, concealing the faults of menstruation, etc., six dharmas, as well as touching gold, shaving pubic hair, eating what has not been given, eating what has been stored, cutting grass, and digging the ground, etc., after the near six dharmas, a total of twelve, is said to be Shikshamana, because there is more or less of what is to be abandoned, if asked in this way, although there is increase or decrease in what is to be abandoned, these have no difference in the substance of the vows, (because the ten that are abandoned are also the vows of Shramanera parents,) only the name has changed, not transformed from the substance.

Because, if a layperson changes their name, they become a laywoman, and if a laywoman changes their name, they become a layperson. If a novice changes their name, they become a novice nun, and if a novice nun and a śikṣamāṇā change their name, they become a novice. If a monk changes their name, they become a nun, and if a nun changes their name, they become a monk. It is merely a change of name, and the previously existing vows are not abandoned (by any of the five causes of abandonment), nor are previously non-existent vows obtained (by any other cause such as behavior). Because if there were a difference in substance, it would not be reasonable to become those things merely by changing the name. Furthermore, those vows such as those of a layperson are distinct, and it is not the case that the earlier ones transform into the later ones, or that they are the same. Because if one were to offer the vows of a monk, it would follow that one would also abandon the vows of a novice, and it would follow that the later ones would be the cause of abandoning the earlier ones. (If it were not so, then the other two would also be included in it, and abandoning the vows of a monk would mean abandoning all three, which is not desirable, because it is said that it would only become inferior. If it is said that committing a root downfall as a monk does not harm the previous two, because they are different substances, then there is no fault, just as a single uncontaminated path can destroy many objects to be abandoned at the same time. However, the manifestation of behavior is a single substance, because one begs with the intention of being a monk and speaks of it as such. Even if one desires according to the mind of abandonment, the same substance will not disappear, because the seeds are different. This is what is said.) Even though they are different, taking the later vows does not mean abandoning the earlier ones, because they are not contradictory to each other. (If this is the case, then if one monk's continuum has all three vows, then the three different ones are contradictory. If this is the case, even though they are different, there is no contradiction in one continuum, just as for a monk, the five from abandoning killing to abandoning drinking alcohol are three each, abandoning singing and dancing etc. are two each, and other abandonments are one each. However, (because it arises from the mind that wants to take many bases of training, it prevents many places of pride and carelessness, but others are not like that,) due to the difference in basis and intention, the monk's abandonment of killing is great, the novice's is medium, and the layperson's is
