There are also those who abide having perfected their practice, such as the gods who approach the sphere of nothingness. This is because it is said in the sutras that this is the seventh consciousness-abiding. Therefore, they are called consciousness-abidings because consciousness grows in them (relying on them in the manner of existence). If there are other abodes of mind, why are only these taught as consciousness-abidings? Because the three lower realms, the fourth dhyana, and the peak of existence, which are additional to those mentioned earlier, are not consciousness-abidings, because (in the three lower realms there is suffering, in the fourth dhyana there are the results of the unconscious, and in the peak of existence there is cessation) they possess the ability to destroy consciousness. In the lower realms, consciousness is destroyed by suffering. In the fourth dhyana, consciousness is destroyed by the unconscious and the samadhi of the unconscious. In the peak of existence, consciousness is destroyed by the samadhi of cessation. Furthermore, beings in the lower realms do not wish to remain there but wish to ascend. Ordinary beings in the fourth dhyana wish to become unconscious, and noble ones wish to go to the Pure Abodes. (And beings in the Pure Abodes wish to go to Nirvana.) These are not consciousness-abidings because a consciousness-abiding is one who wishes to go to another place to abide, and does not wish to move from there to another place. But they are not like that. (Consciousness-abiding is clear in mind,) while the mental activity of those at the peak of existence is not clear. This is how it is explained. What, then, are the nine abodes of sentient beings that are taught? The seven consciousness-abidings mentioned earlier, plus the peak of existence and the unconscious sentient beings, are the nine abodes of sentient beings taught in the sutras (because sentient beings can abide freely in these places). Here, mentioning unconscious sentient beings includes all of the fourth dhyana. For if even the unconscious are not abodes of sentient beings, what need is there to mention others? Teacher Dundzang believes that the other fourth dhyanas besides the unconscious sentient beings are not abodes of sentient beings, because it has already been said that they are not consciousness-abidings.

As explained in the commentary, ordinary individuals of the four dhyanas desire to enter into non-perception. Noble ones, on the other hand, desire to enter into the cloudless and meritorious realms, as well as the Pure Abodes and the Formless Realms. The inhabitants of the Pure Abodes desire to enter into Nirvana, therefore there is no mind that desires to stay there, but they possess the mind that desires to leave from there. Then, if someone asks, what if it contradicts what the teacher said in the commentary, "What else? The evil destinies"? The answer is: that is just stating a door. If the evil destinies, how would they not become places of sentient beings? Because in those places, sentient beings have to stay unwillingly due to previous karma, and there is no freedom to stay at will, so it should be understood that, apart from the previous nine, the evil destinies are not places of sentient beings, just like prisons and executioners are not places where sentient beings can stay happily at will. Furthermore, in other sutras it says: "Consciousness (འདོད་པར།, Sanskrit, Sanskrit Romanization, Literal meaning: desire) dwells in form, approaching form; (གཟུགས་སུ།, Sanskrit, Sanskrit Romanization, Literal meaning: in form) feeling; (གཟུགས་མེད་དང་པོ་གསུམ་དུ།, Sanskrit, Sanskrit Romanization, Literal meaning: in the first three formless realms) thought; (སྲིད་རྩེར།, Sanskrit, Sanskrit Romanization, Literal meaning: at the peak of existence) volition, approaching volition." Thus, the abodes of consciousness are again said to be four. (རྣམ་ཤེས་གནས་པ།, Sanskrit, Sanskrit Romanization, Literal meaning: abodes of consciousness) Those are also the four aggregates of form, etc., with defilements, in order. Moreover, that is one's own ground, not without defilements or other grounds. Because the undefiled is the antidote to consciousness, and other grounds are not suitable as the basis for the consciousness of other grounds. If it is only form, etc., and not consciousness, then what? Consciousness is not said to be the abode of consciousness. Why? Because consciousness is only the dweller (ཡིན་པས་རྣམ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་ངོ་བོ་, Sanskrit, Sanskrit Romanization, Literal meaning: being the nature of consciousness) (ནི་གནས་པ་མ་, Sanskrit, Sanskrit Romanization, Literal meaning: is not the abode), not the abode. The dweller and the abode are like seeds and land, they are the dependent and the basis. On one thing, the dependent and the basis are contradictory. If the seven abodes of consciousness and the four abodes, which one includes which? If we examine their inclusion, then it is four possibilities. Like this, what is included by the seven but not included by the four is the consciousness belonging to the seven abodes of consciousness. Sanskrit, Sanskrit Romanization, Literal meaning: that is, the seven are the nature of the five aggregates) What is included by the four but not included by the seven
