It is not appropriate to arise because of abandoning the supreme position of asceticism. If it is not obtained, it is not a superior place of inferiority, so it is not appropriate to remember the previous abode of the second dhyana.) If they die and are reborn from the second dhyana, even if they see the Great Brahma making aspirations while living in that place, they will not remember it when they are born in the lower realm. If they remember, then those in the lower realm will be directed towards the upper realm. When living in the upper realm, they do not think that we are born from the aspirations of the Great Brahma, because they are beings of the upper realm, so it is impossible to think that it is because of the Great Brahma. Even if it exists, it is the consciousness of the upper realm. Some say that in the intermediate state, one remembers the previous abode, but this is not reasonable. Because the intermediate state is short, one cannot see the Great Brahma dwelling alone for a long time. The sutra says: We see this sentient being living long and for a long time, so it is said that we see it living for a long time. If someone asks: When one is born in the first dhyana, because the people of that place are born with the memory of their previous lives, they remember the previous aspirations of the Great Brahma, there is no fault. Because both are the same as the place of the first dhyana. Or because it is obtained from there. The king's son explained it this way. Again, the sutra says: There are sentient beings with form, with one body and different consciousnesses. For example, the gods of clear light. This is called the third abode of consciousness. Contrary to having different bodies and the same consciousness, those with the same body and different consciousnesses are the gods of the second dhyana. Because the body is the same in the nature of light, and the color, shape, and signs are also the same. Consciousness is that the actual mental pleasure manifests the equanimity of near attainment, and the equanimity of near attainment manifests the actual mental pleasure of fault, so they are different. If so, then will those in the third dhyana also become like that? It will not become like that. Because mental pleasure agitates the mind, so it is not pacified, therefore it is tiring. Happiness is peaceful, therefore it is not tiring. The Sutra School says that in the sutra, in the second dhyana...

Those who have been born for a long time and are skilled in the destruction of the world-system are fearless because the world-system is destroyed by fire burning from the very beginning. And those who have not been born for a long time and are not skilled in the destruction of the world-system are said to be fearful, therefore they are considered to have different consciousness. In this regard, the sutra only mentions the gods of clear light, because grasping one extreme also represents small light and immeasurable light. If it were not so, then these would not be included in the seven abodes of consciousness. The sutra says: There are sentient beings who have the same form and the same consciousness. For example, the gods of increasing virtue. This is the fourth abode of consciousness. It is said that those who have both body and consciousness the same are the gods of the third dhyana, because the body's color, shape, and characteristics are similar, and the consciousness is because the mind is similarly happy. In this regard, the sutra also only mentions the gods of increasing virtue, also to represent the two lower ones. (Among them, the first consciousness is afflicted, the second is virtuous due to the power of samadhi, and the third is the consciousness born of vipaka. In addition, there is also equanimity, these are the same as the abodes of consciousness with form.) Similarly, the three formless ones (infinite space, infinite consciousness, and nothingness) are also abodes of consciousness. The sutra says: Sentient beings, non-material, who have completely transcended the consciousness of form in every way, thinking that space is infinite, thereby perfecting the sphere of infinite space, abide in it. For example, those gods who approach the sphere of infinite space. This is the fifth abode of consciousness. Sentient beings, non-material, who have completely transcended the sphere of infinite space in every way, thinking that consciousness is infinite, thereby perfecting the sphere of infinite consciousness, abide in it. For example, those gods who approach the sphere of infinite consciousness. This is the sixth abode of consciousness. Sentient beings, non-material, who have completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness in every way, thinking that there is nothing, thereby perfecting the birth of nothingness.
