The fully ripened form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness will ripen in the hells. Once fully ripened, they are counted among those called hells. The Blessed One said that apart from these dharmas, no other hells are to be found. For the aggregates of maturation produced by karma are said to be the realms of rebirth. (Some hold that there is only maturation, while others hold that there is also increase.) If there are five realms of rebirth, then where are the asuras and gandharvas, etc., that are taught in other sutras included? The asuras, according to the Mindfulness Sutra, belong to the realm of the pretas and the realm of animals. Among them, the first are the pretas of the demon class, and the pretas with great magical powers. The second are those who dwell on the earth at the bottom of the ocean, that is, the support of Mount Meru, located beneath the earth at eighty-four thousand yojanas, which is said to be included in the pretas and animals. The teacher Asanga considers them to be included in the gods because they can compete with the gods in enjoyment and even intermarry. The *Treatise on the Grounds* states: "The asuras should also be regarded as included only in the realm of the gods. However, because they are very deceitful and have not become vessels of white dharma like the gods, they are therefore specifically shown as different realms in some sutras. Although they are gods themselves, they do not abide by having properly taken up the dharma of the gods, therefore they are called asuras." This explains "non-" as a word of negation. (In the upper commentary of the *Treatise on the Grounds*, the teacher Guṇamati refutes the statement that asuras do not understand the truth and are therefore definitely non-humans belonging to the realm of pretas, saying that the sign is uncertain and therefore unreasonable.) The teacher Guṇaprabha considers them to be included in the realm of gods and pretas. The *Explanation of the Five Aggregates* states: "The realm of the asuras is not mentioned separately because it is included in the realm of gods and pretas." Some say in the *Meeting of Father and Son Sutra* that the six realms of beings taught by the Buddha are: (Beings in hell, animals, pretas, asura realms, humans, and gods. The Lion of Men made conventional designations. Brahma

The reason for having that view is that those arose as soon as he made the prayer.) Because it is said like this, it is considered the sixth kind. Gandharvas are of two types: intermediate state beings and celestial musicians. The former is not included in the six realms, while the latter is a deity. Ghouls and those with decaying bodies are mostly hungry ghosts, but there are also some belonging to the class of gods. Nagas, Garudas, Kinnaras, and Mahoragas belong to animals. Flesh-eating ghosts, mad ghosts, forgetful ghosts, Matrikas, and flesh-eating ghosts in the dust, etc., are hungry ghosts. Rakshasas are a kind of human being, while Yakshas, Guardian Kings, World Protectors, and Maras mostly belong to the class of gods, but there are also some belonging to Nagas and hungry ghosts. Explaining the abodes of consciousness and the abodes of sentient beings, in these five realms of the three realms, there are seven abodes of consciousness. The sutra says: 'Sentient beings, with form, different bodies, and different perceptions, such as humans and some gods. This is the first abode of consciousness.' There, sentient beings with different bodies and perceptions are (the three lower realms,) humans, desire realm gods, and those born later in the first dhyana, because their bodies have different colors, signs, and shapes, and their perceptions are also different in happiness, suffering, and equanimity. Again, the sutra says: 'Sentient beings, with form, different bodies, and the same perception, such as the gods of the Brahma realm who first appeared. This is the second abode of consciousness.' There, those with different bodies and the same perception are those born earlier in the first dhyana, (Brahma of Speech, Brahma of Clothing, and Great Brahma.) because their bodies are large and (retinue.) small, and the perception is that the Great Brahma thinks that these are born from my will (the cause is the same,) and those who were first born as his retinue also think that we are born from the will of the Great Brahma. If those born in the retinue of Brahma, how do they know that we are born from the prayer of the Great Brahma? (Those who have attained the mind of the second dhyana, the precepts aimed at Brahma.
