If we differentiate, in the realm of form, the three states of the first dhyana, that is, through their respective abodes, the mind of equanimity that can produce fruition is practiced as small, medium, and large, in three types. Furthermore, because it belongs to the Brahma assembly, it is called the Brahma Paradise; abiding as if reciting the Vedas in front of Brahma, it is called Brahma's Retinue; because life and color, etc., are particularly superior, and it is the main deity of Brahma, it is called Great Brahma, these are the three of the first dhyana. Because the light is less than the one above, it is called Limited Light; because the light is immeasurable, it is called Immeasurable Light; because the light is extremely clear, it is called Clear Light, these are the three of the second dhyana. Because the happiness of the mind is less than the one above, it is called Limited Joy; because it possesses immeasurable joy, it is called Immeasurable Joy; because joy is extremely extensive, it is called Universal Joy, these are the three of the third dhyana. The explanation of this as small virtue, etc., is because the term "Kushala" refers to both joy and virtue, so the translators translated it as virtue, but in reality, it refers to the joy of the mind. Therefore, each of the first three dhyanas has three types, and the fourth dhyana is practiced with defiled causes as the small, medium, and large three types of the fourth dhyana, and with undefiled and mixed practices as the small, medium, large, extremely large, and most extremely large five types, a total of eight types of differences, as the abode of fruition. Furthermore, because there is no lower foundation that abides like overlapping clouds, it is called Cloudless; because it arises from unwavering merit, it is called Merit-Born; because it is the most excellent of the virtuous results of the respective ordinary beings of the form realm, it is called Great Fruit, these are the three abodes of ordinary beings. Because the pure abodes are inferior to the ones above, it is called Non-Affliction; because there is no torment of afflictions, it is called Non-Heat; because one can see the Dharma well, it is called Good Appearance; because the view is good, it is called Good Vision; because there is no other abode above it, it is called Akanistha, these are the five abodes of the noble ones, a total of eight types. These five abodes of the noble ones are also called Pure Abodes because they are not mixed with ordinary beings. Regarding this, the Kashmirian Vaibhashikas say in the commentary: Only Brahma's Retinue is Great Brahma.

It is said that the most supreme place is the sole Lord, manifested as a single congealed mass, and there is no other place besides that. Therefore, the Purvaka school believes that there is no other different Brahma besides the Purvaka, so they believe there are sixteen places. And the Sunyavadin and Sutrantika schools believe that there are other separate places, so they believe there are seventeen. The Mahayana school says in the "Substance of the Grounds": "Beyond the pure abodes, there is the abode of the Great Lord. Bodhisattvas who abide in the ten grounds, after fully cultivating the ten grounds, are born there." The "Moon Secret Bindu" says: "Having abandoned the pure abodes, in the delightful Akanistha, the true Buddha attains enlightenment there, and the Nirmanakaya attains enlightenment here." Therefore, above Akanistha, there is also a place called Great Akanistha, which is the pure land of the Sambhogakaya, and is also called the abode of the Great Lord. The reason it is called the Great Lord is because it has attained the Dharma-Isvara of the Dharma-megha. This is because the upper commentary explains it this way, and the Bodhisattvas of the ten grounds are empowered and crowned by the light of the Buddhas. The Sutra says: "In the first dhyana, there are Brahma-parisadya, Brahma-purohita, Maha-brahma, and Brahma-kayika; in the second dhyana, there are Parittabha, Apramanabha, Abhasvara, and Subhakrtsna; in the third dhyana, there are Parittasubha, Apramanasubha, Subhakrtsna, and Subhaviharin; in the fourth dhyana, there are Brhatphala, Parittasubha, Apramanasubha, and Asanjnasattva." Thus, for each dhyana, four different places are mentioned, of which the first is a summary, and the others seem to be different names. The meaning of the words is that they possess excellent form and maintain their own characteristics. Explaining the formless realm, it is said that in the formless realm (as previously explained), there are no different places. Why? Because there is no form, and different places are distinguished by form. However, wherever the (body) dies, it is born there in accordance with the samadhi of the formless realm (that was attained). So, how does (the seer) become four forms? The initial cause is infinite space, and infinite consciousness, and nothingness.
