Then, how are the tactile sensations present in fire, etc., food? This is because it is mostly the case, so those are not food, some think so. (This shows that the three sources of birth are mostly food, and does not show that sunlight and shadows are oral food.) If the form source present in rice, etc., is also eaten and swallowed, why is it not oral food? The form source is not oral food, because food is beneficial to the senses and their arising, but the form source is not beneficial to its own sense organ, the eye, and is not beneficial to the arising of the sense organ's support. When it is swallowed, if it is not beneficial to one's own sense organ and its arising, how can it be beneficial to other sense organs and arising? If one is afflicted by hunger, is it not beneficial even to just see food? Just seeing food and feeling content is taking the touch that experiences pleasure as food, not the form source. If it were just seeing the form source, then for those who are free from desire, the non-returners and arhats would also be satisfied just by seeing food, because it is not beneficial to those who are liberated from the afflictions of desire. (Now, seeing food that is free from greed is also not beneficial.) At that time, it is also only considered that existence-related (mind or) touch (afflicted) is food. (If someone says that form is not oral food because it is not the object of the sense organ that is grasped after contact, just like sound, that is well said. In addition, mind and dharma are not colored, the five senses are clear like light, and sound has no continuity, so it is not oral food.) The Vaibhashikas say that the meaning of food is to nourish existence, so touch, thought, and consciousness are only tainted food, and the untainted is not food because it causes existence to cease and is the enemy of existence (so the three untainted touches, etc., are also). (Therefore, even if it is increased by unsuitable elements and dryness, it is not food.) Their nature has already been explained. They exist in these three realms. Then, the sutra says that food is what sustains beings

It is beneficial to those who can stabilize, nourish, and seek existence. As it is said, the arising here refers to birth, so what is seeking existence? Because it is born from mental illusion and does not rely on the impurity of parents, it is born from mind; (formerly or) possessing the state of seeking birth, it is seeking existence; because it eats subtle fragrances as food, it is a গন্ধর্ব (Gandharva); because it exists between death and birth, it is an intermediate existence; because it clearly tends towards birth, it is called the existence of manifestation, these are just names. Therefore, the sutra says: Abandoning the bondage of manifestation, but not abandoning the bondage of birth, etc., it speaks of four sentences, the first of which is: The non-returner has detached from desire from the lower two realms; the second is attaining Nirvana in the intermediate state; the third is an Arhat; the fourth does not include those mentioned above (us, etc.). Or, arising refers to Arhats, and seeking existence refers to those who possess existence. Also, why are the four foods taught? Because the mind and mental factors rely on this life, that is, the body with the senses as the basis grows, so it is coarse food, and the mind and mental factors themselves grow, so it is contact food. In this way, because it is mainly to nourish the existence that has already arisen, the first two foods, like a mother, coarse food and contact food, are taught. To project other future existences is volitional food, and to manifest the consciousness of future existence projected by karma is consciousness food. In this way, because it is mainly to generate the unborn existence, the latter two foods, like a mother, are taught in order, so it is determined to be four foods. However, these are said in a major way, and coarse food and contact food also indirectly project existence, because afflictions arise from those, and karma is accumulated from them, and the sutra also says: Bhikshus, these four foods are the root of diseases, tumors, and suffering, and are the causes of aging and death. Therefore, it is said.
