Because it does not focus on the object of attention, and because there is only Dharma in its own territory, it is said to be its own territory. The meaning of summarizing all these is that all eighteen kinds of near-going are with outflows, (because they can make sentient beings grow, and the holy path turns its back on sentient beings), because they go near with attachment to the object of attention. This is the view of the Vaibhashikas. The teachers think that all outflows are not near-going, because this is said about the happiness etc. that depends on attachment, so that is only affliction. It is explained like this. If it is said that when explaining dependent origination, only ignorance, name, touch and feeling are explained here, and not others, then, form, consciousness and the six sense bases have already been said to be explaining the realms, and action, existence and craving will be explained in the fourth and fifth places (they have already explained the continuous dependent origination), and others have not been said. Sixth, explaining the example symbolized by dependent origination, is in the occasion where dependent origination is summarized into three: affliction, action and basis, and shown here, afflictions are equal to seeds etc. How is it? For example, just like trees etc. arise from seeds, afflictions, actions and basis also arise from afflictions; just like the lake where dragons live does not dry up, the lake of birth where the dragon of affliction lives also does not dry up; just like forests etc. are not uprooted from the roots, even if they are cut down they will regenerate, if the roots of affliction are not uprooted, the birth of beings will also regenerate; just like trees produce flowers and fruits at different times, afflictions will also produce flowers and fruits of afflictions, actions and basis many times. Similarly, it is thought that action is like the husk of rice, for example, rice with husk can grow, rice without husk cannot grow, action with the husk of the attainment of affliction can produce the sprout of existence. Similarly, action is the husk and

Just like the fruit of the earth, karma accompanied by the husk of afflictions is the proximate cause for generating the sprout of existence. Similarly, it is like medicine; just as medicine eliminates one disease and its potency subsides, so too, karma produces one fully ripened result and does not produce a second. Likewise, just as a flower is the proximate cause of a fruit, so too, karma is the proximate cause of a fully ripened result. The seven bases of suffering, just as food and drink that have been prepared are only to be enjoyed, and after being enjoyed, they do not connect again (because they cannot serve as seeds). Therefore, from a fully ripened result, another fully ripened result does not arise in another lifetime; if it did, then even an Arhat would have fully ripened results, and thus would not be liberated from samsara. Thus, existence does not go beyond four types.

At that time, one cannot exert effort on the virtuous deeds previously practiced, nor can others remember them. Similarly, this should be applied to non-virtuous deeds as well. Moreover, the *Meaning-Secret Differentiation* states, "In the Great Vehicle, it is said that all minds at the time of death are neither obscured nor predicted." Therefore, when the clear mind before death arises, even if there are virtuous and non-virtuous [thoughts], the mind at the time of death is considered only as unpredicted. Furthermore, among the four existences, the desire and form realms both possess all four, while the formless realm has only three, because there is no intermediate existence there. Therefore, the *Compendium of Topics* also states, "The existence of the intermediate state is when being born in the desire and form realms. When transferring from the formless realm." This refers to the case of dying from the formless realm and being born in the lower two realms, because its intermediate existence belongs to the lower two realms. Now, explaining the food by which one abides, as the *Samyukta Agama* states, "Beings abide by food." The Blessed One, having directly realized and perfectly awakened, taught one Dharma, which is that all sentient beings abide by food. There are four kinds of food: coarse and subtle morsel food, contact food, volitional food, and consciousness food. Among these, the first, morsel food (because the upper two realms are free from desire), exists only in the desire realm, which is the nature of the three sense bases of smell (divided and swallowed by the nose, tongue, and body, thus related to the desire realm), taste, and touch. Why? Because they are divided and swallowed by the nose, tongue, and body and then eaten. Morsel food also has two types, coarse and subtle. The first is the food of intermediate beings, desire realm gods, and the first humans of the eon, because they eat fragrance, and like pouring sesame oil on sand, it dissolves into the diseases of the limbs, so there is no common cause. Alternatively, subtle beings such as infants and moisture-born beings eat subtle food, while other beings eat coarse food. Similarly, bathing and massage, which do not swallow but maintain the body, are also subtle foods. Then, what about shadows and the sun?
