Six kinds of near-going. Six kinds of pleasant near-going. Six kinds of equanimous near-going. Compared to the previous division into six, it is further divided into eighteen kinds. What are the eighteen? Six kinds of pleasant near-going, six kinds of unpleasant near-going, and six kinds of equanimous near-going. If these are established based on their own nature, or their correspondence, or their object of focus, then how? If according to the first, there would only be three: pleasant, unpleasant, and equanimous. If according to the second, since it corresponds with the mind, there would only be one. If according to the third, since it focuses on the six objects, there would only be six. If asked in this way, then it is established from all three. From its own nature, there are three: pleasant, unpleasant, and equanimous. From correspondence, it is the near-going of the mind. From the object of focus, each of the three also becomes six, because there are six objects such as form. Among these, fifteen are focused on the determination of each object such as form, so they are focused on the unmixed. The three near-goings focused on dharma are focused on both the mixed and the unmixed. Near-going is either because, relying on the mind, feelings such as pleasure go on the object, or because, relying on feeling, the mind goes on the object. Bodily feeling is not a near-going of the mind, because the near-going of the mind relies on the mind with conceptualization, while bodily feeling only relies on the form of the sense faculty, and is without conceptualization. The pleasure of the third dhyana is also not a near-going of the mind, because it is abiding steadily. (Among them, the Vaibhashikas believe that relying on the mind, feeling goes on the object, while the Sautrantikas believe that by the power of feeling, the mind goes on the object.) In which realm are these located, and how many are there? In the desire realm, there are all the near-goings of the mind (eighteen kinds). These are also objects with the desire (realm) itself as their focus, because when focusing on the form and formless realms (the upper two realms), the eighteen are not complete. If the object of the mind's near-going in the desire realm, that is, the object of focus, is the form realm, then there is no smell or taste there, so apart from the six that focus on these two, there are twelve. The form realm above the desire realm and the formless realm, because there are no five objects there, focus on dharma.

In the desire realm of the earth, pleasure, displeasure, and equanimity become the objects of experience. These are governed by desire. In the first and second dhyanas of the form realm, there are twelve. This is because there are no six kinds of displeasure in those dhyanas. Those twelve are also minds that go to the desire realm and are objects, but they are not objects of their own realm or higher realms. This is because there are no smells or tastes in those dhyanas. Therefore, if one focuses on the form realm itself, there are eight, because there are pleasure and equanimity that focus on form, sound, touch, and dharma, excluding smells and tastes. The formless realm is the object of both pleasure and equanimity that focus on dharma. In the third and fourth dhyanas, there are six (of equanimity) near-going minds, because there is no pleasure in those dhyanas, and mental pleasure does not become near-going, so there are six of equanimity. The object of those six is the desire realm, because there are six equanimities that focus on the six objects. The form realm itself is the object of the four near-goings of equanimity, because there are no two that focus on smells and tastes. The upper formless realm (of the form realm) is the object of one near-going mind of equanimity that focuses on dharma. If the formless realm of infinite space approaches, there are four near-goings of equanimity. This is because in the infinite space and the fourth dhyana, one sees peace and roughness, so the mind approaches the object of the form realm (of the four). (The fourth dhyana) also has four objects there. That is, if one observes according to each of the four objects, there are four, but if one observes by combining the four objects, then there is only one near-going that focuses on the mixed dharma. Going from the form realm to the formless realm above is also one near-going, because there is only dharma. Even in the four formless realms, there is only one near-going mind. These are the objects of the virtuous dharmas of the formless realm, and the sutra says, "It is the lower realm with outflows."
