Therefore, this explanation only shows the distinction between cause and effect, and not the general aspect of dependent origination of conditioned phenomena, because it does not include external dependent origination such as the sprouting of a sprout from a seed. Therefore, some say that ignorance and action, etc., are only as their literal meaning, so it should be explained. So, what is the meaning of 'ignorance'? Like this, a mental factor that arises from a mind that is unclear about truth, action and result, and the Three Jewels, etc., which is directly contrary to correct knowledge, is ignorance. But it is not merely the negation of not having knowledge or not being knowledge, because non-existence and matter would also become ignorance. For example, unfriendliness and falsehood, i.e., untruth, and so on, including non-dharma, non-meaning, non-action, etc., are understood like enemies, lies, non-virtue, wrong views, and evil deeds, etc. If ignorance is not just the absence of knowledge, then what is it? The sutra says, 'Conditioned by ignorance, actions arise.' Because the sutra shows it as an entity by way of a condition. Furthermore, in other sutras, it is spoken of with words such as the pervasive application of ignorance, and so on, including bondage, latent tendencies, rivers, and connections, because non-existence is not suitable to be these. Although that is so, if one says that bad wisdom is ignorance, just as calling a bad child a non-child, that is not correct, because bad wisdom is a view, and view and ignorance are said to be different root afflictions, and rivers, etc., are also said to be different. If one says that wisdom that is not a view is ignorance, that is also not correct, because view is said to be concordant with that ignorance, and since view is also wisdom, it is impossible for two substances of wisdom to exist in concordance. The sutra says, 'A mind defiled by desire is not liberated; wisdom defiled by ignorance is not purified.' Ignorance completely defiles wisdom.

It is to show itself, and wisdom itself is contradictory to causing affliction to itself. These explain that the venerable Palena considers ignorance to be the general name for afflictions, the venerable Dharmaraksha considers beings to be attached to "I", and the teacher Dharmakirti says, "All forms of faults arise from the view of the aggregate of destruction." From this, it can be seen that they all consider the view of the aggregate of destruction to be ignorance. After that, the form of name and form has already been explained. Name refers to the four non-form aggregates such as feeling, etc. The reason for saying this is that they (such as Devadatta, etc.) understand the meaning by means of names, and they are unobstructed like names. After that is contact, which is the six types of contact from eye-combination contact to mind-combination contact. These contacts are also (sense faculty and object,) the combination of the eye faculty, form, and eye consciousness, which results in the complete cognition of the object. Similarly, one should also understand the ear-combination contact, etc. On this, some ancient teachers said that the sutra says, "Thus, these three dharmas are related, aggregated, and whatever is the collection is contact." Therefore, contact is a designation for the aggregation of three, and there is nothing else besides that. Other teachers say that in the six-group sutra it says, "What are the categories of the six-group dharmas? Namely, the six internal sources, the six external sources, the six consciousness aggregates, the six contact aggregates, the six feeling aggregates, and the six craving aggregates." Therefore, contact arises from the aggregation of three, and is another existence different from the mental activity of completely cognizing the object. If it were merely the aggregation of three, then it should not be explained separately from the twelve internal and external sources and the six consciousnesses. Among these six contact aggregates, the eye-combination contact, etc. (the first) five are obstructive contacts, because they rely on obstructive roots. The sixth mind-combination contact is called the contact of verbal concepts, verbal concepts are names, and the mind mainly focuses on names as objects, so it is naming the possessor with the object.
