这里梵语是pratītyasamutpāda(藏文:པྲ་ཏཱི་ཏྱ་ས་མུད་པཱ་ད་,梵文天城体:प्रतीत्यसमुत्पाद,梵文罗马拟音:pratītyasamutpāda,汉语字面意思:缘起)。其中,前缀prati(藏文:པྲ་ཏི་)是相遇和依赖的意思。词根iti(藏文:ཨི་ཏི་)是去的意思,但与前缀prati相关联时,会完全转变为“从”和“且”等,因此称为相遇且。正如语法学家所说:词根虽然具有力量,但前缀会压倒其力量而改变。恒河之水虽然甘甜,但就像海水一样。 词根pāda(藏文:པཱ་ད་)存在,但前缀samud(藏文:ས་མུད་)在前面,表示产生,因此因缘和果相遇后才如实产生。相遇的意思也是不间断地产生。从相遇而产生也是在相遇之时产生,就像说张开嘴睡觉一样。因此,语法学家说,因为不存在的不能相遇,即使存在的相遇了,之后产生也不合理,因为已经成立了。从相遇而产生也是渐次的声音,因此从相遇而产生的声音是有过失的,这也已被驳斥。有些人在这里详细考察了缘起的同义词,但按照这里的观点,通过指示三时和三部分,自然就能理解。

Because they are those, therefore they are taught, because they also symbolize everything else. Fourth, explaining the meaning of the sutra, the sutra says: Bhikshus, you should be taught dependent origination and the dharmas of dependent origination. What does this mean? The treatises say that both are names for all conditioned dharmas, without any difference. However, what is relied upon to be a cause is not a result relative to it; what is relied upon to be a result is not a cause relative to it. Therefore, the sutra says that here dependent origination is the cause (of the five limbs) that produces the later, because the result arises from this. Dependent origination is considered to be the result born from the former, because it arises from the cause. Why are they called dependent origination? Here the Sanskrit word is pratītyasamutpāda. The prefix prati means meeting and relying. The root iti means going, but when associated with the prefix prati, it completely transforms into "from" and "and" etc., therefore it is called meeting and. Just as grammarians say: Although the root has power, the prefix overwhelms its power and changes it. The water of the Ganges is sweet, but it is like the water of the ocean. The root pāda exists, but the prefix samud is in front, indicating arising, therefore the cause and condition and the result meet and then truly arise. The meaning of meeting is also arising without interruption. Arising from meeting also arises at the time of meeting, just like saying sleeping with an open mouth. Therefore, the grammarian says that because what does not exist cannot meet, and even if what exists meets, it is not reasonable to arise after that, because it has already been established. Arising from meeting is also a gradual sound, therefore the sound of arising from meeting is faulty, which has also been refuted. Some people here examine the synonyms of dependent origination in detail, but according to this view, it can be understood naturally by indicating the three times and three parts.

Furthermore, I have not engaged in that analysis because it belongs to other schools of thought. Also, in the sutras, it is said, 'When this exists, this arises; when this is born, this is born.' These two statements refer to the fact that when ignorance and so forth exist, actions and so forth arise; if they do not exist, they do not arise. Similarly, 'When this is born, this is born; when this is not born, this is not born'—this is the meaning that must be grasped. When ignorance exists, actions arise; when actions are born, consciousness is born. And so forth, is this to show the continuity of the limbs? Or, because when the previous extreme exists, the present extreme arises; when the present extreme is born, the future extreme is born—is this to show the continuity of two lifetimes? According to both of these, it is to show the direct and indirect causes and effects. 'Actions are conditioned by ignorance,' and so forth, is an extensive explanation. In one way, 'When this exists, this arises' refers to dependence on a cause without intention; 'When this is born, this is born' refers to dependence on an impermanent cause; 'Actions are conditioned by ignorance,' and so forth, refers to dependence on a cause of ability. In another way, simultaneous existence, immediate succession, and even long-delayed cessation can become causes. To show this, 'When this exists,' and so forth, was said. In all cases, it was said to negate incompatible causes such as causelessness and a permanent self. Fifth, explaining the continuous dependent origination, the Sutra school and others say that ignorance and so forth are not the temporary five aggregates. In the sutra it says: What is ignorance? It is said: It is not knowing the former extreme. And so forth, ignorance arises from the mind of not knowing, and actions refer only to thought and so forth. Ignorance and so forth are not the most important, because consciousness alone is the most important, and it would be too much to show only that. If the word 'chief' is used to express the majority, then in the previous life only ignorance is the majority, while in this life only craving and grasping are the majority, which is not certain. Moreover, consciousness and name and form exist without distinction in the desire and form realms.
