If it is said like this, regarding the past extreme, the future extreme, and the middle three, I existed in the past, will arise in the future, now I eat such food, wear such clothes, etc. Or, did I exist in the past? Did I not exist? Will I exist in the future? Will I not exist? What is this like now? Because such doubts arise, in order to dispel such doubts and their cause - ignorance of self. Secondly, the three are summarized as three afflictions, that is, from these dependent originations, the afflictions are ignorance, craving, and grasping. Karma is action and existence. Because it is the basis of karma and afflictions, the basis is consciousness and so on (other) five and birth and old age and death two, a total of seven. Just as the seven limbs are the basis, so are they also the limbs of the result. These karma and afflictions are also the limbs of the cause, so everything becomes the limbs of cause and effect. Therefore, Master Nagarjuna also said in the Sutra of Dependent Origination: "The twelve dharmas are divided into three, the first, eighth and ninth are afflictions, the second and tenth are karma, and the remaining seven are suffering." Therefore, there are two types of dependent origination, namely the past extreme and the future extreme. Each of them has cause and effect, of which ignorance and action are the cause of the past extreme, and consciousness to feeling is the result, and craving, grasping, and existence are the cause of the future extreme, and birth and old age and death are the result. In the Compendium of Categories, it is said: "Whatever is action, whatever is consciousness, whatever is craving, these are all classified as the pervasive afflictions of karma." This is karma from the perspective of the Alaya consciousness holding the karmic imprints. Similarly, it also speaks of four limbs, namely the projecting limb, the projected limb, the accomplishing limb, and the accomplished limb. Among them, ignorance, action, and consciousness are the projecting limbs, because the karmic imprints caused by ignorance are instilled in the mind, thereby projecting name and form, etc.
