Having been born, one accumulates karma through afflictions and also faces death. The karma and afflictions accumulated in this life lead to the intermediate state of the afterlife. Then, one gradually goes into successive rebirths in that state of existence. Those who have not severed the root of existence with the wisdom of realizing selflessness will continue to be drawn to death and birth without end. Therefore, the cycle of the four existences has neither beginning nor end. (Regarding the occurrence of death, it is said in the chapter on impermanence: Some die in the womb, some at birth, some while crawling, some while running, some young, some old, and those who have reached maturity gradually fall like ripe fruits.) Here, one should also understand the reasoning for proving previous and subsequent lives, which can be found in detail in the Pramāṇavārttika and Kamalaśīla's Tattvasamgrahapañjikā, among others. Therefore, it is unreasonable for some to say that all of samsara will eventually be exhausted, as this would imply that sentient beings have an end. As it is said in the Bhadracaryāpraṇidhāna: "As far as space extends, so do all sentient beings." It is also unreasonable to think that samsara has an end because there is decrease but no increase, like the wealth of a poor person, because immeasurable things do not become exhausted even when decreased, like space and so on. Therefore, samsara has no beginning in general or in particular, because if sentient beings had a beginning, it would lead to the fault of being without a cause, and without a cause, it would lead to the fault of being non-constant. There is no end in general, but there is in some individuals. They believe that: "The body is destroyed, feelings cool down, perception ceases, formations are pacified, consciousness vanishes; this is said to be the end of suffering." Then, if the mind of an Arhat at the moment of parinirvana generates a subsequent mind, then there would be no end even for individuals. If it does not generate, it would become non-existent, because it would be empty of function. To this, some schools argue that the stream of subsequent consciousness does not arise, and all

In order to accomplish the objects of omniscient wisdom and some other things, it is considered that both of these faults are absent. The people of the higher vehicle respond that there is no mention of faults because it is for the sake of generating the later continuum of wisdom that is liberated from samsara, and for the sake of not generating the mind that is immersed in samsara. Secondly, the extensive explanation is divided into temporary dependent origination, summarizing into three afflictions, the distinction between cause and effect, explanation of the meaning of the sutra, continuous succession, and six symbolic metaphors. The first is that the continuum of aggregates, with the nature of the previous birth, the present birth, and the future birth, whatever wheel of samsara it may be, will become the twelve links of dependent origination. That is, the past extreme, the future extreme, and the present part or category, these three. How is that? The past extreme is ignorance and action, the future extreme is birth and death, and in between are consciousness (from ignorance to death) and name and form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, and existence, these eight. This refers to the time when it is encompassed by the first three birth places of desire, and is complete and endowed, because it is not so certain for those who are born miraculously, die in the intermediate state, and the two upper realms. What are those like that? Ignorance is the five aggregates (i.e., afflictions) at the time of practicing afflictions in the previous life (previous existence). (Although it is thought that ignorance is the projector, so it is abandoned by seeing, it is not contradictory that the ignorance abandoned by meditation, which does not see the truth, can also project, and the karma that completes the abandonment by seeing. Projecting from seeing is the reversal of craving for samsara. This is how it is explained.) Master Asanga considers both seeing and meditation to be abandoned. Actions are the five aggregates (i.e., karma) at the time of practicing (meritorious) virtuous deeds and other actions (three types) in the previous life (previous existence). Consciousness is the five aggregates in the moment of connecting the continuum in the mother's womb in this life. (Consciousness and birth are each one moment, and the others are continuous.) Name and
