(From the perspective of purity,) connection, (through samadhi) detachment from desire in the desire realm and the form realm, and decline from that (through inappropriate attention), (the shutting down of the senses,) death and the taking of rebirth in the intermediate state and the state of birth, these six minds, some are with investigation, some are samadhi, and some are unclear, therefore they are considered to be only the mind-consciousness school. Yogacharas consider the (mind) of birth and death to be the alaya-consciousness. Feeling is considered to be equanimity itself in death and rebirth. Other feelings are not accepted because they are manifest. Therefore, in the third dhyana, only the access concentration has the mind of death and the mind of birth, but not in the actual state, because there is no equanimity. This is the explanation of the teacher Kangspe. That mind-consciousness, even in the samadhi of single-pointed concentration, does not have birth and death, (because of samadhi,) because different kinds of minds are manifested, and because samadhi is born from the effort arising from manifest attention (so it is clear), and (because of extreme pliancy) it benefits the body (so in the two higher dhyanas, the mind of samadhi does not have these). In the state of no-mind (the three states) there are also none of those (death and rebirth), (because they cannot harm those who are in those states,) because death and rebirth are the transfer of the mind to another place and connection, so there is no mind. Therefore, in the unconscious beings, it is said that the mind arises even at the time of birth and death. (Also, because without afflictions, it will not arise.) Among the three states of death that are mentioned, the Arhat's passing into nirvana, (if it is considered that there is resultant equanimity as in the desire realm,) then it is either the karmic activity or the result of maturation (whichever it is, if there is not, then it is the karmic activity,) the mind is either virtuous or non-specified, one of the two, this is specifically pointed out, because these two minds are weak and similar to the interruption of the mind stream, while the others are strong. In the commentary of the teacher Kangspe, some say

Some say that an Arhat, having abandoned non-virtue (and afflictions) and being pure with the uncontaminated, will not pass away from that. Virtuous actions with outflows are connected with ripening, and an Arhat turns his back on future ripening, so the mind of virtue does not pass away. That's what they say. Others say that one ultimately abandons samsara, that is, abandoning desire from desire is non-virtuous, abandoning desire from the peak of existence is obscured and unspecified, the mind of passing away is manifested as unobscured and unspecified is virtuous, and entering the realm of no remainder is abandoning the unobscured and unspecified. That's what they say. That's what is said. Secondly, regarding the manner of death, if at the time of death, in which part of the body does consciousness cease? Down to the three lower realms, up to humans and gods, that is, those who have birth and those who do not, Arhats who pass away, etc., for those who are born miraculously, it is not certain in this way (if one dies simultaneously, the mind and all the physical faculties cease simultaneously). Gradually, that is, when dying in the first three places of birth, in sequence, the hell-being from the foot, the human from the navel, and the god and Arhat transfer their mind at the heart. Some say that the Arhat transfers from the crown of the head. That's what they say. In fact, consciousness is formless and invisible, so it does not abide in a place. However, at the time of death, just as water sprinkled on a heated stone vanishes, the physical faculties of the body vanish in the feet, etc., and this is called the transfer of mind. In the Compendium of Topics, it is said that the body of one who does good deeds becomes cold in the lower part first, and the body of one who does evil deeds becomes cold in the upper part first. According to this, except for the part that gathers heat, it is ultimately believed that everything transfers from the heart to the alaya consciousness. If at the time of death and transfer, what (cause) are those that sever the vital points? The severing of the vital points is (if bile, phlegm, and wind are excessive, then in sequence) water, and the elements of fire and wind, included by the word "etc.," any one of them violently disturbed, by its power causing some parts of the body to be damaged, resulting in death. Just as if struck by a sharp weapon, damaged by unbearable sensations, like being cut off, it is immovable, and not that ghosts and demons directly split the body into pieces.
