If it were always constant in its very nature, then nothing would ever arise anywhere at any time. If time, place, and things are occasional, then they are impermanent and diverse, because their characteristics are such. If the Lord is constant and one, but due to his will, this should arise first, that should arise later, this should arise in this place and not elsewhere, this thing should arise and not another, because he desires it, then it is occasional. In that case, these would not arise from the Lord, because desire arises from impermanence and diversity, and the Lord is constant and one. Even if desire itself is the Lord, it is still subject to the accusation of being impermanent and diverse. Similarly, this should also be applied to the self and the chief, etc. The detailed explanation of cause and condition (or arising from both) is that if the cause of an element is an element, then there are two types: equal and simultaneous arising, if the similar former produces the latter, that is equal; (being the same as the other three components) simultaneous arising is mutually simultaneous arising. If the elements produce the form transformed from the elements (as the dominant condition), then there is only one type of causal condition, which has five aspects. These five aspects are stated in the commentary: for the sake of producing, for the sake of relying, for the sake of abiding, for the sake of depending, and for the sake of increasing. Gampopa supplemented the first two phrases, saying: arising and conforming, relying and, uninterrupted and increasing, in order to newly produce the form of the fruit that has not been produced before, like a student from a teacher, in order to make the arising continuity conform, like a picture on a wall, in order to become the basis for continuous existence, like food for the body, in order to become the uninterrupted cause, in order to increase from top to top, it should be understood in sequence. If these are summarized, there are three causes: producing the unproduced, causing the produced to exist, and causing the existing to increase. Thus, these five aspects are the distinctions of the efficient cause, therefore the elements become the efficient cause transformed from the elements.

The others are not, because they are not equal, and although they arise together, they are not mutual causes and effects, not pervasive, do not possess sameness, and it is impossible for the elements to transform into good or non-good. If form transformed from elements (transformed by elements) produces each other, then they arise together, and are equal and the cause of maturation in three ways. Therefore, combine it in this way. Among these, arising together is (arising from the gathering of the four great elements), the seven abandonments of meditation and undefiled discipline are mutual, but the others (arising from different gatherings, such as the eye and its five objects and individual liberation, etc.) are not. Equality is when the former of the same kind, such as good or afflictions, produces the latter. The cause of maturation is form and non-form, defiled good and non-good (actions of body and speech), producing bodies such as the senses (eye, etc.) including the realms of desire and evil destinies. If the cause (condition) of the elements is transformed from the elements, then it only acts as the cause of maturation in one way. That is, (actions of body and speech), form and non-form, defiled good and non-good, produce the elements that have already arisen in the aggregates of the senses that are the maturation result of the next life. Although there is also an acting cause, it is not always counted because it enters without distinction, so it is said in the commentary. (The self-cause is not explained because it is easy to understand.) To explain the immediately preceding condition in detail, the mind of the desire realm, that is, together with mind and mental factors, is divided into four types: good, non-good, obscured and unspecified, and unobscured and unspecified. In the form realm and the formless realm, there are three types each, other than non-good mind. Undefiled dharma has two types: learners and non-learners. Thus, all minds of samsara and nirvana are summarized into twelve types. What arises immediately after these? In this regard, one should know the classification of six or eight times: constant time, same ground, entering into absorption, (entering into absorption) arising from absorption, rebirth, afflictions of entering into absorption.
