Explanation of Conditions. Explanation of Conditions. Third, explaining conditions, there are five points, the first of which is a brief explanation, which says that conditions are said to be fourfold. From where is it said? In the sutra it says that conditions are four: namely, the causal condition, the immediately preceding condition, the objective condition, and the dominant condition. So, what is the difference between cause and condition here? Some say that when a result arises, whether one's own continuum ceases or does not cease, and whether one helps the result in a unique or common way, these two are, in order, cause and condition. Commentators also say that the near condition is the cause, and the distant one is only the condition. Others say that what produces is the cause, and the condition is merely the object. Although there are such statements, here, the Vaibhashikas consider these two to be merely different names, with no substantial difference. The commentary "Meaning Clear" says: "What is the difference between causes and conditions? Answer: There is none at all. For example, the Blessed One said that two causes and two conditions produce right view. Which two? External sound and internal proper attention." It also says: "Monks, the eye is with cause, with condition, with basis. Monks, what is the cause of the eye? What is the condition? What is the basis? Monks, the cause of the eye is karma, the condition is karma, the basis is karma." Similarly, for the cause and condition of ignorance, and for improper attention, etc., it is also extensively explained (in combination). Therefore, cause, condition, basis, agent, reason, sign, cause and effect relationship, and fruit position are all just names. Therefore, it should be known that when producing and accomplishing a result, they are called cause and condition respectively, but there is no difference in meaning. However, the Blessed One sometimes speaks of six causes and sometimes of four conditions, just as when showing the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, it is to suit the inclinations of the beings to be tamed. The detailed explanation is, what are these four conditions? Among them, the so-called causal condition is:

Besides the efficient cause, there are five causes. Mind and mental factors are the immediately preceding condition, and should be connected as such. Is it all? No, the last mind and mental factors of an Arhat entering cessation are not the immediately preceding condition, because they believe that the continuum of mind and mental factors is cut off. Here, because the nature is the same, it is called "equal," that is, one consciousness immediately after another consciousness, one feeling immediately after another feeling, and so on. Therefore, form is not spoken of as the immediately preceding condition, because (it arises without diminishing) the nature is not the same. Therefore, this condition is both "equal" and "immediately preceding," so it is called the "immediately preceding condition." On this, Venerable Yizong believes that (the meaning of unequal) is the increasing continuum of form aggregates, one not ceasing, the second increasing arises. (Therefore it is confused) He thinks so, the meaning of which is that the increase of food has not ceased, and the increase of sleep and good deeds and samadhi arises. The Sūtra Master's abiding Venerable said, because from many comes few, and from few also comes many, such as from ashes comes a small amount of ash, and from the seed of the banyan tree comes many branches and so on. The commentary says that because of the unequal arising, form is not the immediately preceding condition, so it is thought that after the form aggregate included in the desire realm, sometimes the non-manifest form included in the desire realm and the form realm arises. Sometimes the form included in the desire realm and the unpolluted dharma arise, so the appearance of form is confused. The immediately preceding condition is not confused, the sutra says so, the meaning of which is that after taking the Prātimokṣa vows, if one does not enter samadhi, then only the Prātimokṣa vows arise. If he enters into defiled samadhi, then the precepts of samadhi arise. However, (not entering samadhi and defiled and) entering into undefiled samadhi, then (in order only the Prātimokṣa vows and samadhi and) the form of the undefiled precepts arises, so it is confused.
