Therefore, the Dharma that existed in the time of Kāśyapa was not obtained in the time of Krakucchanda and Kanakamuni; and the Dharma of the time of Maitreya may not be obtained in the time of Simha and Prabhasa, and so on. That is to say, however, these are the distinctions made by the Vaibhāṣikas, like analyzing the length of a rabbit's horn. The non-attainment of the present Dharma exists only in the past and future, but not in the present, because if the Dharma exists, then non-attainment is contradictory (because there must be attainment). Then, to which realm does non-attainment belong? The Dharma of the desire realm that is not attained in the desire realm belongs to the desire realm, and what is included by "etc." (non-attainment in the two upper realms also belongs to those realms themselves). Non-attainment in the form realm belongs to the form realm, and non-attainment in the formless realm belongs to the formless realm. Similarly, the Dharma of the form and formless realms that is not attained in the three realms of the desire realm, etc., also belongs to those realms (that is, on the basis of the desire realm, the Dharma of the desire realm, the qualities of the desire realm that arise from effort and are innate, and the qualities of the two upper realms that arise from effort, and the non-attainment of the uncontaminated also belong to the desire realm, and the same is true of the two upper realms. This is established by the basis, not by the Dharma, because the non-attainment of the uncontaminated is contaminated, etc., which contradicts the Dharma. Some say that the basis of the formless realm is not combined with the attainment of the two lower realms, because the attainment of those two is not allowed. This is reasonable.) The non-attainment of the undefiled path and cessation, which do not belong to a realm, also belongs to the desire realm, etc., so connect it. If the non-attainment of the uncontaminated, how does it belong to the three realms? The non-attainment of the uncontaminated path is considered to be that of an ordinary being, so it is definitely only contaminated, because the *Treatise on Matters* says: What is an ordinary being? It is one who has not found the Dharmas of the noble ones. The Dharmas of the noble ones means that any Dharma of the Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Buddhas has not been found, not just any one, because if that were the case, then they would also become ordinary beings, because the Śrāvakas have not found the Dharma of the Pratyekabuddhas, etc. Similarly, the non-attainment of the two cessations is also only contaminated, because that

Two is unpolluted, because not obtaining the unpolluted is polluted, it should be said like this. However, the non-attainment of cessation of separate investigation also exists for the noble ones. If there is no non-attainment of cessation of separate investigation of wisdom and so on, then wisdom and so on will have cessation of separate investigation. If that is the case, it would lead to the absence of wisdom and qualities and so on. It is also not right to say that the non-attainment of that cessation is polluted, because there is nothing other than wisdom and so on. Furthermore, just as the non-attainment of the unpolluted is polluted, why does the non-attainment of the polluted not become unpolluted? Because there is no difference. It is also not right to say that the non-attainment of the polluted that exists in ordinary beings is the three realms, and that which exists in the noble ones is nothing other than cessation, because this is the same for the non-attainment of the unpolluted, and if the non-attainment of the polluted is cessation, then the view that all non-attainment is polluted will collapse. Furthermore, if the non-attainment of the path is an ordinary being, then why does its non-attainment not become the path? Because there is no difference. If that is the case, then it must be determined that there is non-attainment of the unpolluted. Then, how will the ordinary being be abandoned? (That is to say, from the lower ground, from the ninth liberation free from desire, abandoning the desire for its ordinary being, although abandoned, it will not completely disappear, from the upper ground, although it completely disappears due to the change of birth place, it is not abandonment, because it has already been abandoned before. If the ordinary being is abandoned, will it become a noble one? It will not become a noble one, because even if the ordinary being of one place is abandoned, the ordinary being of another place will arise.) Although it is explained like this, it is in terms of ordinary people, for the noble ones, only by the power of the path will the attainment of ordinary beings not arise. Is there no attainment of non-attainment and non-attainment of attainment? Both exist, because the attainment of non-attainment is explained, and the non-attainment arises by explaining the attainment. Then, will the attainment become endless? It will not become endless, because they are interdependent, for example, taking the vows of individual liberation as an example to illustrate the joyous feast of attainment, the first moment of the Dharma of attainment, the vows of individual liberation, and its attainment
