If it is said that one is an Arya because of possessing the attainment of Dharma, and so on, is that so? It is not so. Because attainment is meaningless since it changes by the very abandonment and non-abandonment of the seeds of afflictions to be abandoned by the path of seeing, and so on. If it is said that the seeds themselves are the attainment, if it is asserted as a name, it is not prohibited. But the meaning is not so. If that were the case, if attainment becomes the cause of all Dharmas, then that has already been refuted. Furthermore, the present attainment will not become something that will arise in the future, because it is the cause of that. Similarly, this should be applied to purified seeds and so on as well. Moreover, attainment also has attainment and non-attainment, and non-attainment also has attainment and non-attainment. Saying this is also not reasonable. Because if attainment has attainment, it would become endless, and since attainment is not established as a real entity, it is also unreasonable that it is not attained, and it is contradictory for non-attainment to have attainment, and if non-attainment has non-attainment, it would also become endless. Therefore, the three—seeds, potential, and manifestation—of all Dharmas, having them in the continuum of ordinary beings and Aryas is called attainment, and not having them is called non-attainment, and there is nothing that has become another substance other than that. Among these, seeds are latent, potential is the seed tending towards manifest arising, and manifestation is the own nature of all Dharmas. This should be understood. (That is to say, innate virtue is possessed because the basis has not damaged the seed with wrong views, and if it is damaged, it is called not possessed. Acquired virtue is possessed because the being and the continuum have the unobstructed potential for it to arise. Obstructed is not possessed.) Second, explaining non-attainment, non-attainment is not possessing the Dharmas included in the continuum of sentient beings and cessation. That is, non-discovery, non-possession, and never possessing. Among these, non-discovery is when those Dharmas are newly not possessed after having been previously attained. Non-possession is not possessing its continuum. Never possessing is like ordinary beings not possessing the uncontaminated path. (If, like attainment, non-attainment also has virtue, non-virtue, etc.? No.) The nature of such non-attainment is only un-obscured and unspecified. If non-attainment is an afflicted (Dharma)

If (like the earth) it is so, then for those who have abandoned afflictions, it will not exist (the unobtained of the uncontaminated will also become uncontaminated). If it is a virtuous dharma, then for those who have severed the roots of virtue, it will not exist. That is why the Vaibhashikas say so. Some say it is virtuous, some say it is afflicted, and some say it is non-obscuring and non-committal. Who would refute such a statement? Then, is the unobtained of all dharmas also threefold in time? Answer: There is a difference. The unobtained of past dharmas and unarisen future dharmas, etc., is of three types: (The unobtained is threefold in time. If we take the example of vows, such as the past of the Pratimoksha vows, the past person did not obtain it in the past, just like the self-born person, before he was born, his unobtained arose in his continuum. The past one is now unobtained, just like the second moment of abandoning with the cause of abandonment, his unobtained arose. The past one is unobtained in the future, just like after the second moment of abandoning, his unobtained arose. The present unobtained of the Pratimoksha vows is not present, because if it were present, it would contradict being unobtained. His unobtained is past, just like the person who obtained it, before he obtained it in his continuum, his unobtained arose. His attainment is future, just like in the second moment of abandoning with the cause of abandonment, his attainment is abandoned, and the unobtained arises. The unobtained future of the Pratimoksha vows, which are dharmas that will arise in the future, is like the unobtained of that vow arising simultaneously with the future itself. His unobtained is present, just like his unobtained itself transforming into the present. The unobtained future of the Pratimoksha vows, that unobtained future, is like after the second moment of that unobtained future transforming into the present, his unobtained arose. It is thus certain.) The past dharma is unobtained in the past, unobtained in the present, and unobtained in the future, because these situations exist. The future is also the same as this. If the past dharma is unobtained in the past, and the future dharma is unobtained in the future, this is impossible, because if those dharmas exist at those times, then it contradicts being unobtained. Answer: At those times
