Regarding the non-stable dharmas arising from the mind, and the cessation of some of those stable ones, it is called the attainment of cessation. The first says that it ceases the six aggregates along with their retinue, and the second says that it ceases the seven aggregates along with their retinue. To ascend beyond the peak of existence is like the stages of an Arhat and a Non-Returner, it is to be free from desire from the peak of existence and to abandon what is abandoned by seeing and cultivation. Regarding this, Sthavira Dhyigbhesa in the treatise called "The Complete Inquiry" says, "If according to some view, the attainment of cessation is without mind, then that would be a fault, but I say that the attainment of cessation is with mind." If the mind is considered to be the Alaya-vijnana, then that is indeed so, but they do not accept that, because they are Vaibhashikas. If the mind is considered to be the six consciousnesses, then it would not be the cessation of perception and feeling, because they are the universal concomitants of the mind. It is also not permissible to say, "The gross concomitants are ceased, but the subtle ones are not," because if the meaning of subtle is the Alaya-vijnana along with its retinue, then they do not accept that, and for the six consciousnesses, it is not possible to distinguish the difference between gross and subtle. Therefore, it is also reasonable that the venerable Dhyangdroka said in the sutra, "If there is consciousness, then from the aggregation of the three, contact arises, and from contact as a condition, the aggregates of feeling, perception, and thought arise." If those do not have mind, then how could it be attainment? Because meditators consider it to be the equal placement of the mind on the object. It is not so, because through the difference of attention, the great elements are established as being equally abiding without contradicting the arising of mind? Or through the power of the samadhi of the practice of attainment, perception and feeling are ceased in sequence, therefore it is called their attainment, the schools answer in this way. The Yogacara practitioner, through the power of attention, makes it so that the six and seven consciousnesses do not arise in the Alaya, therefore for them it is attainment (they are substantially existent, because they are able to obstruct the arising of mind, so it is said

) That's what they say. (If the teacher thinks that it is not because of those obstacles that the mind does not arise, but because the mind of absorption causes obstacles and the mind does not arise, then this is also equivalent to producing a body or alaya consciousness that is contrary to the arising of the mind. It is only because the future mind and mental factors do not arise that it is called absorption. Because the body or alaya consciousness in the state of non-arising is called absorption, it is considered to be fabricated.) Seventh, explaining the life faculty, the life faculty is the life of the three realms. (In the Abhidharma,) What is the life faculty? It is the life of the three realms. That life is also (non-corresponding compositional existence), the warmth of the body and (all three are) the basis of consciousness, that is, the non-corresponding compositional existence. In the lower two realms, it is the basis of both body and consciousness, but in the formless realm, it is only the basis of consciousness, and merely the consciousness of the same kind is not the life faculty, because for the unconscious beings and those in the mindless absorption (dwellers), it would be inferred that there is no fault of having no life faculty. Moreover, all the consciousness of the formless beings from birth to death will only become fruition, because there is only the consciousness of mind there, and that is also the life faculty, and the life faculty must also be only fruition. If that is the case, then there can be no virtue in the formless realm, because fruition is only neutral. Therefore, the life faculty is only the non-corresponding compositional existence that serves as the basis of body and consciousness, as stated in the Bhikshuni Vinaya Sutra: This life, warmth, and consciousness, When they abandon this body, Having abandoned, what remains at that time, Know that it is like a tree without mind. Thus it is said, the Vaibhashikas say so. In response, the Sutra masters believe that if the body and consciousness depend on life, then what does life depend on? It cannot exist without dependence, like the body and consciousness. If it is said that life also depends on the body and consciousness, then because they are established by mutual dependence, neither is established.
