The root of it is the merit arising from motivation. (Because it is considered a contaminated merit.) Experiencing the result is divided into two types: experiencing the result after birth and experiencing the result in other instances, as well as three types of uncertain experiences. However, there is no experiencing of results in the visible Dharma, because its Vipāka is the four aggregates of name in the peak of existence, and those born in the desire realm and form realm cannot be born there at that birth. Among them, experiencing the result after birth is when the noble ones of the desire realm, after obtaining it, go to the peak of existence without degenerating. Experiencing the result in other instances is when those who have obtained it in the desire realm and degenerated, manifest it in the form realm and go to the peak of existence. Experiencing the uncertain result is when both of them attain Arhatship in the desire realm and form realm. The individual is a noble one, not an ordinary person, as it is said in the sutra: "Because there is no future life, it is harmful, like a cliff that frightens children." Therefore (if a child who has attained the peak of existence is prevented from clinging to self in his mind stream), he is afraid of being suspected of annihilation, and it should be generated by the power of the noble path, and because he can enter Nirvana in the visible Dharma, the non-returner and the Arhat, etc., have faith in this cessation, while ordinary people are not like that. Therefore, the teacher Bhadanta also said that without abandoning what is to be abandoned by seeing in the peak of existence, one cannot generate the absorption of cessation there, because ordinary people have not abandoned it. Therefore, not all noble ones can enter this samadhi, because if this samadhi is entered based on the mind of the peak of existence, then it is a noble one with attachment, as well as some non-returners, and Arhats who are liberated by wisdom, because they have not attained the mind of the peak of existence. Therefore, in the Matter-Ground it is also said that two dharmas are cherished in the absorption of cessation, namely Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. Among them, Śamatha is the eight absorptions of gradual abiding here, and Vipaśyanā is the wisdom of the noble ones, because if one of the two is missing, one cannot enter samadhi, so if both are complete, they will be cherished. Therefore,

Those who do not return, having attained the mind of the peak of existence, and the Arhats who are liberated from both, are able to directly realize the cessation of peace in the present life, and therefore they, as well as Pratyekabuddhas and Bodhisattvas from the sixth bhumi onwards, and the Buddhas, are able to enter into this samadhi. It is attained through the practice of generating the power of the noble mind, and not merely by being free from desire. Therefore, (even if it is completely lost and then generated, only the unprecedented state is attained at once.) Like the Pratimoksha vows, only the present is attained, and not the past or the future. Then, is it attained through the practice of all the noble ones? (That is the rule for Hearers and Solitary Realizers, but the special case is that the Buddha attains it simultaneously with the attainment of the knowledge of exhaustion, so it must be attained by being free from desire for the peak of existence. The time is like the pull of the mind entering samadhi. Although there is no death when entering the cessation samadhi, one dies immediately upon arising. Because desire touches the energy of food, one cannot enter samadhi for more than seven days. For higher levels, it is as one wishes.) It must be attained through Bodhi, and not through practice, because there is no effort for all qualities. As it is said in the "Praise of Accomplishing All-Knowing Wisdom": "Perfect virtue, in you, there is not the slightest thing born from effort. Wherever you are certain, it depends only on your intention." Like that. If the Buddha attains the cessation samadhi at the time of directly realizing the knowledge of exhaustion and non-arising, if it is not directly realized, then it will become not liberated from both, because without directly realizing cessation, one cannot be liberated from the obscurations of samadhi. On this, the Vaibhashikas residing in the west of Kashmir say that the Buddha generated the path of seeing under the Bodhi tree based on the mind of the fourth dhyana, and then generated the cessation samadhi based on the mind of the peak of existence, and after arising from that, relied on the mind of the fourth dhyana to abandon the objects of abandonment of the peak of existence, and therefore directly realized the knowledge of exhaustion and non-arising, so he is liberated from both. In the word-treatise of the tradition of the Elder Upagupta
