One should also understand the attainment. This is what they think. And this attainment, its ground belongs to the last four of the fourth dhyana. The thought is that (of samsara) one must definitely emerge from suffering, that is, because one desires liberation (i.e., because one regards the attainment without path and without consciousness as liberation), one enters into attainment. Therefore, its motivation is virtuous. (That is also the virtue gathered by dhyana.) That is also the virtue that will be experienced after birth, (because there is the thought of birth and death). The maturation of this is the accomplishment of the five aggregates of unconscious beings. Those who, having attained this attainment, fall away, (because of reverence for it), will surely be restored, and because of arising, in other instances, experiencing and not experiencing are not certain. And, those who possess this attainment, because they will not be born without consciousness in this life, it is also not something to be experienced in this life. (Therefore, those who have attained it do not enter certainty, because they presume to see cessation manifestly, so even the Buddha is not an object to be tamed, they say.) Pundit Gampala says in the commentary: Anyone who generates this attainment and completely falls away will surely be generated again and will be born among the unconscious beings. It is said. The word "it is said" appears to indicate other views, that is, others say that some experience after birth and some do not necessarily experience. Therefore, whether one falls away or not, if one regards it as a fault because of encountering a virtuous friend, then from there one will enter certainty, and one will no longer arise, nor will one manifest. That person is only an ordinary person (liberation and the path to liberation have manifested), and not a noble one, because one will be born in the long-lived gods from this. That is also because it is a place of un-leisure, so it is regarded as a place of falling away (and because one does not regard existence as liberation). Therefore, only those children who think of this as liberation enter. Therefore, those who meditate by blocking all mental activity, that is only unconscious attainment, because it possesses all the characteristics. That is also past and future.

It is not obtainable (for the first moment), only the present of the same time is obtainable (although this is complex, it must be accomplished with effort), because there is no mind. However, until it is not abandoned, (obtaining) is also related to the past, like the Pratimoksha vows. (Because there is no mind, the future cannot be obtained.) Here, by the difference of attention, blocking the body or mind, the collection of the six consciousnesses, is called such Samadhi, but there is no other substance transformed from body and mind. Although it is not a substance, due to the difference of attention, the corresponding dharmas will not arise, like the Samadhi in which all thoughts are gathered. Similarly, it should be understood for the upper and lower ones as well. Sixth, explaining the Nirodha-samapatti, what is called Nirodha-samapatti is just like the previous Asamjñi-samapatti, it is the cessation of mind and mental factors. Because there are differences in attention and so on, first, attention is, this Samadhi is entered into for the purpose of abiding in the four feelings and perceptions (it is peaceful! Thinking of peace like this), but not for the purpose of liberation from it. The ground is born in the peak of existence, relying on the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, because it is said in the sutra that at the end of the subtle and subtle, it is easy to block the corresponding dharmas of the subtle mind. (Because its Vipaka is the accomplishment of the four aggregates of the peak of existence, or because the liberation of turning away from existence and practicing with the exhaustion of mind is not in other grounds, so it is the ground of the peak of existence.) Master Vasubandhu also said: Why is it that only in the peak of existence is there Nirodha-samapatti, and not in other lower grounds? Because if it is established with the two reasons of turning away from the object and cutting off the exhaustion of mind, then the lower grounds do not have these two reasons. Therefore, it is said like this. Other schools think that this is the ground of the fourth Dhyana, but it is not so, because the Bhagavan said that the four Dhyanas, the four formless Samapattis, and the Nirodha-samapatti are the Samapattis of gradual abiding. (The noble ones do not consider afflictions or the unstated to be peaceful.)
