Suppleness and so on are not mind-born because the body itself is workable. The commentary also says: 'Extreme training of the body makes the mind workable, leading to the limbs of enlightenment. Because it is in accordance with this, it is also named as a limb of enlightenment. For example, in the sutra, things like joy and the place of joy are said to be the limb of perfect enlightenment of joy, and anger and the cause of anger are said to be the obscuration of harmful thoughts. Although correct thought and effort are not the nature of wisdom, they are said to be the aggregate of wisdom because they are in harmony.' This is how it is explained.

It is said. The divisions are (from the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras: First, the armor of diligence, then the diligence of properly entering into union. Not being discouraged, not retreating, not being content is diligence. There are five of these. From the Compendium of Determinations, there are five: armor, union, not retreating, not turning back, and taking delight in not being content. Or) armor, union, and the diligence of not turning back. The function is to perfect all virtues. These ten are called the many great grounds of virtue because they always arise in all virtuous minds. If faith is of the nature of joy and compassion is mental anguish, how can they arise together in one mind? Similarly, how can mindfulness with effort and equanimity without effort, and those of the desire realm, since they are accompanied by distraction, how can extreme pliancy arise? It is asserted that they all arise in part, except for the amount, as has been said before. Other schools assert that these are good by nature, but that not all virtuous minds are pervaded by them, and this is the reasonable view. Third, the ignorance of the many great grounds of affliction is not knowing or being unclear about karma and its results, the truths, the Three Jewels, etc. Ignorance, unawareness, and delusion are synonyms. Its function is to be the basis for all root and near afflictions. Carelessness is the opposite of mindfulness, not cultivating virtue and not guarding the mind from contaminated things. Its function is to be the basis for misdeeds, or to increase non-virtue and decrease virtue. Laziness is the opposite of diligence, not taking delight in virtue. Its function is to obstruct engaging in virtue. Lack of faith is the opposite of faith, the mind not having faith. (The divisions are three: laziness of clinging to bad deeds, cowardice, and holding onto idleness.) Its function is to be the basis for laziness. Drowsiness is heaviness of body and mind, a dullness where the object is not clear, making body and mind unfit for work. The divisions are (gate

(Arising in the cycle of the five consciousnesses and the mind consciousness.) The two are physical and mental dullness. Of these, physical dullness arises in the cycle of the five consciousnesses. Its function is to be a friend to all afflictions and near afflictions. Agitation is when the mind is not pacified and scatters from the object to other places. Its function is to cut off calm abiding. These six are the afflictive ground of multiplicity because they always arise in all afflicted minds. If agitation engages clearly with the object, and ignorance and dullness engage unclearly, then how do these arise in one mind? This should also be understood as before. Well, in the Abhidharma teachings, dullness does not arise, but forgetting, distraction, non-intelligence, inappropriate attention, wrong faith, and ignorance, etc., five, a total of ten arise, why are the first five not explained here? The Vaibhashikas say that dullness is in accordance with samadhi, therefore it is not mentioned in the Abhidharma, and forgetting and so on are dependent on mindfulness and so on, therefore they are not mentioned here. The teacher thinks that dullness, like agitation, is not in accordance with samadhi, so it is mentioned here. (Are those that are numerous also the afflictive ground of multiplicity? There are four possibilities: the first is the five omnipresent ones. The second is the five non-believing ones and so on. The third is the opposite side of the five objects of determination, such as afflicted mindfulness. The fourth is other than those.) The fourth, the ground of many non-virtues, is: Know that all non-virtuous minds are pervaded by these two, shamelessness and lack of shame, which will be explained, and the function is to be a friend to all afflictions and near afflictions. Fifth, the wrath of the ground of minor afflictions is the agitation from within the mind when beings who cause harm, etc., become manifest, and it has the function of conflict. Holding a grudge is to continuously hold onto it after being angry, and its function is to be the basis of intolerance. Deceit is (for the sins committed by oneself).
