"Ba" is conceptualization, and seeking distinctions is investigation. These are also the root of all speech (speech that only states the essence through conceptualization and speech that states the differences through investigation). As it says in the sutra: Speak after thinking and investigating, but do not speak without thinking and investigating. Furthermore, in the "Inconceivable Secret Sutra," it says: Peaceful Wisdom, on the night when the Tathagata attained unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment and became a Buddha, and on the night when he passed into complete nirvana without remainder, during this time, the Tathagata did not utter even a single syllable, nor will he. Why is that? Peaceful Wisdom, the Tathagata is always in equipoise; the Tathagata does not have exhalation or inhalation, no conceptualization, no investigation. Without conceptualization and investigation, there is no production of speech. It is like this saying. It is explained that the five branches of the first dhyana also arise gradually, not instantaneously. Again, what is the difference between pride and arrogance? Pride is the arrogance that arises from observing any difference in others, and then focusing on lineage, etc., in the mind (thinking, "I am superior to him"). If classified, there are seven types, which will be explained later. Its function is disrespect towards teachers, etc., and it serves as the basis for the arising of suffering in samsara. Arrogance is the mind that clings to one's own qualities such as lineage and appearance, completely exhausting and consuming it. (The difference between these two is that one focuses on one's own qualities and the other focuses on the qualities of others.) The teacher Bhadanta explains that clinging to lineage, etc., and causing the mind to turn away from virtue is the meaning of exhaustion. Some teachers believe that it is the joy that arises from clinging to one's own lineage, etc. However, the Vaibhashikas do not think so, because joy does not exist from the third dhyana onwards, while arrogance is said to exist in all three realms. In terms of classification, the "Letter to a Friend" says: Lineage and appearance, learning and youth, and great power, view arrogance as an enemy. Here, five types are mentioned. (Its function is to prevent the mind from engaging in virtue.)

The uncertain desires, anger, and doubts of the ground are not discussed here because they will be shown below. Fifth, the explanation of the various names of mind and mental factors: the sutra says that mind, intellect, and consciousness are expressions of different names for the same meaning. Because it distinguishes between virtue and non-virtue, it is mind; because it knows form, etc., it is intellect; because it knows the object, it is consciousness, as the sutra says. This is the view of the Vaibhashikas. The Sautrantikas, on the other hand, believe that because it accumulates the habits of virtue and non-virtue, it is mind; because it becomes the basis, it is intellect; because it becomes the dependent, it is consciousness. Similarly, (in the *Arthasamgraha*, from the perspective of the Hearer Vehicle, three definitions are explained according to the differences in function, time, and object of taming. First, because there is the saying "going far and wandering alone," it is the mind that makes one go far; because there is the saying "all dharmas are preceded by the mind," it is the intellect that makes one go before; because there is the saying "consciousness arises from the condition of action," it is the consciousness that connects the continuum. Second,) the future is mind, the past is intellect, and the present arising is consciousness. (Third,) in the realm (teaching, it is the seven realms of mind), in the source (teaching, it is the source of intellect), and in the aggregate (teaching, it is the aggregate of consciousness). Therefore, the wise explain that this is explained according to the three functions, three times, and three teachings. The Yogacharas believe that mind is the alaya-vijnana, intellect is the afflicted mind, and consciousness is the active consciousness. The *Dense Arrangement Sutra* says: Mind is the alaya-vijnana, the grasping of self therein is intellect, whatever consciousness is of the object, that is considered the active consciousness. Therefore, the three, mind, etc., have the same meaning. Similarly, the statements about mind and mental factors, as well as having a basis, having an object, having an aspect, and having association, also have the same meaning. Mind and mental factors themselves rely on the six senses, and because they have objects such as form, and because they have blue, etc.
