Those not mixed with afflictions have ten grounds. Afflictions have six grounds.) Twenty and sixteen and (those corresponding to mixed views also have sixteen, those corresponding to greed and others have ten grounds, afflictions have six grounds, greed and others themselves and seventeen and those not obscured have grounds.) It is certain that they arise with ten grounds, it should be said. Fourth, explaining the differences of similar mental factors, then what difference is there between shamelessness and lack of embarrassment (aren't both the same in being unreserved)? Disrespecting qualities and those who possess qualities is shamelessness, not fearing misdeeds such as killing is lack of embarrassment, these are their differences, it should be said. Among them, not fearing is wisdom, not fearing is ignorance, therefore, the proximate cause of both is affliction, the Vaibhashikas think so. Other schools say that, in sequence, relying on self and others, not regarding sins and engaging in them is shamelessness, lack of embarrassment. The opposite of shamelessness and lack of embarrassment is knowing shame and having embarrassment. Also, what difference is there between joy and respect? There are two kinds of joy, non-afflictive joy towards qualities and those who possess qualities is faith, afflictive joy towards sons and wives etc. is desire. Faith does not pervade joy, such as focusing on suffering and the origin of suffering. Joy does not pervade faith, such as joy being an affliction, joy towards sons and wives etc. Therefore, the commentary explains the four possibilities for joy and faith. Respect itself is knowing shame in honoring qualities and those who possess qualities. Other schools say that joy and respect are not faith and knowing shame, faith and respect are respectively believing in qualities and honoring qualities and those who possess qualities, from these two (this is further divided into four possibilities of faith and joy towards Dharma and persons, first the four possibilities focused on Dharma, believing in the first two truths is faith and not joy, because both are not objects of joy. Joy is afflictive is the second possibility, because it is existence.

Third is faith focused on cessation and path, which is trust and should be rejoiced. Fourth is mental events other than those, and non-associated formations, etc. The four categories of love and respect focused on individuals are: loving sons and wives, etc., is love, which is the first category without respect. The second is respect for others' teachers, etc. The third is respect for one's own teachers, etc. The fourth is like focusing on sentient beings who are objects of hatred. The difference between these two is significant: respect is solely virtuous, while love has both virtue and attachment. Respect itself is the shame of honoring qualities and those who possess qualities. Other schools believe that love and respect are not faith and shame, but rather faith and respect are, in order, trusting in qualities and honoring qualities and those who possess qualities, and the joy born from those two and the fear-accompanied shame are, in order, love and shame. Those two, love and respect, also exist in the desire realm and the form realm, which is said in terms of focusing on individuals (because those two are actions of body and speech). Those two focused on Dharma exist even in the formless realm. Furthermore, what is the difference between investigation and analysis? Investigation and analysis are, respectively, the coarse aspect of the mind's engagement with the nature of an object, and the subtle aspect of engaging with the specific characteristics. The function of these two is to serve as the basis for abiding in pleasant contact and not abiding in pleasant contact. If so, how can these two arise simultaneously in one mind? Some say that investigation does not make the mind too subtle, and analysis does not make it too coarse, like sunlight shining on butter in water. If it were not so, the first dhyana would not become five-branched, because when one of investigation and analysis is present, the other is absent. Other schools believe that investigation and analysis, along with them, exist up to the peak of existence, because there is coarseness and subtlety depending on what is being considered. Therefore, since coarseness and subtlety are contradictory aspects when considering one object, they do not exist in one mind, but they do arise in the sphere of consciousness, seeking the nature of meaning.
