For a mind with desire, there is longing; for a mind with distraction, there is concentration; for a mind with forgetfulness, there is mindfulness; for those without faith, is there devotion? Such investigations should also be understood. Other schools hold that because such faults exist, the five, such as longing, are definite in their respective objects and are not universally present. Mindfulness is not forgetting the object; the distinctions are twofold: defiled and undefiled. Its function is to prevent the mind from being distracted from the object. Attention is the mind's engagement in directing the mind towards an object; the distinctions are twofold: appropriate attention and inappropriate attention. Its function is as stated in the sutra: "Obtaining attention is obtaining concentration." Therefore, it causes the mind to focus on the object. Devotion is desiring or perceiving the object as having qualities; the distinctions are twofold: correct devotion and incorrect devotion. Its function is as stated by the teacher Blo dro Tenpa (Intelligence Steadfast), cherishing devotion because opponents cannot steal from one's own tenets, thus preventing one from being stolen from the object. Concentration is one-pointedness that engages in one object in one way. Here, "one-pointedness" refers to the object. The distinctions are nine concentrations in the nine grounds, and the tenth, which is beyond the world. Its function is that if the mind is placed evenly, knowledge arises as it is, thus serving as the basis for knowing as it is. These ten are called the many grounds of mind because they arise in all minds. If all minds generate these, then would the efforts of practitioners become meaningless for generating desire, devotion, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom? No, because it is for generating special ones, so say the Vaibhashikas. If such ten differences are not observed in one mind, then the differences of these should be understood from reliable scriptures, because they are subtle and difficult to understand, so they are not objects of the senses. If even for those that have become objects of the senses, such as colored things like mixed medicines, one cannot grasp the different distinctions, then what need is there to mention about mind and mental factors?

What need is there to mention it? Therefore, it is said in the commentary: "The differences between mind and mental factors are so subtle that it is difficult to completely determine them even for continuums, let alone for momentary ones. For the time being, even for material things like medicine, it is difficult to ascertain the differences in taste among many flavors that can be perceived by the senses. What need is there to mention those dharmas that are non-material and can be perceived by the mind?" If one assumes that there is no difference simply because one does not see a difference, then it is the same for those who speak of the five omnipresent ones. What does the scripture say? In the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness, it says: "For example, the ten dharmas of the great earth are feeling, conception, thought, contact, attention, desire, aspiration, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. Thus, for one object, they are considered to be different characteristics." The eleven dharmas, such as consciousness, are like rays of sunlight that gather together, but their essence is different. Similarly, from the essence of consciousness to thought, they are different. Therefore, they are said to be the ten omnipresent earth factors. It is also said that these mind and mental factors are not different entities. Second, explaining the many aspects of virtuous ground, faith is the clarity that separates the mind from the defilements of afflictions and near afflictions. The divisions are: having faith in the results of actions, having clarity towards the qualities of the Three Jewels, and having the desire to abandon and cultivate the Four Noble Truths. The function is to generate desire. Mindfulness is cherishing and cultivating virtuous dharmas such as faith (or guarding the mind from outflows and the sources of outflows). The divisions are four types of mindfulness that cultivate merit, liberation, factors of ascertainment, and uncontaminated virtue. The function is to perfect all the perfections of the world and beyond. Tranquility is the mind's ability to abide on the object. The divisions are: physical tranquility, which arises in the realm of the five sense consciousnesses; and mental tranquility, which arises in the realm of mind consciousness. Alternatively, physical tranquility is when the body is as light as cotton, and the waist is like stacked golden pots.
