The five root afflictions, namely twenty-two, are substantial because they become objects of consciousness without relying on speech, sound, or other reasons. The remaining twenty-nine are imputed because they are the opposite of those reasons (or, some say that whatever exists independently in its own nature is substantial, and whatever does not exist independently in its own nature but is merely spoken of is imputed). That is, the three, such as non-ignorance, view, and non-correct knowledge, are solely wisdom. Mindfulness and equanimity are the three roots of virtue, along with diligence. Non-harming is non-anger. The five, such as anger, resentment, vexation, jealousy, and malice, are anger. The three, such as miserliness, pride, and excitement, are desire. The four, such as concealment, drowsiness, disbelief, and laziness, are ignorance. The two, such as flattery and deceit, are desire and ignorance. The three, such as shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, and distraction, are the three poisons. Disrespect is attributed to the three poisons and laziness, or, in the Hidden Meaning, it is said to belong to the category of desire and ignorance. (Malice is said to be attributed to anger.) Forgetfulness is defiled memory. Sleep and regret, included in the near afflictions, which are defiled, are attributed to ignorance. Virtue and unobscured neutral are said in the Hidden Meaning to be attributed to wisdom. The two, investigation and analysis, are said to be attributed to mind and wisdom. Here, in the Compendium of Topics and so on, imputed existents are considered to be twenty-nine. In general, although not directly explained among the fifty-one mental factors, the twenty-four that arise from the fundamental branches are also imputed (fifty-three) because they are explained in the Fundamental Collection. Therefore, the mental factors become seventy-five and so on, which should be known. The third is the three of the first group, and arrogance among the minor afflictions, and regret and doubt among the undetermined, these thirty are all pervasive in the three realms and nine grounds. The seven, except for the two of the unwholesome and the three of flattery, deceit, and arrogance among the minor afflictions, and the twelve of regret, sleep, and anger among the undetermined, are only in the desire realm. The four, flattery and deceit among the minor afflictions, and investigation and analysis among the undetermined, are

They exist only in desire and the first dhyana. These should be understood through reasoning, in the scriptures themselves. Fourth, the first four categories, and the uncertain investigation and attachment and aversion, these thirty-two arise appropriately in the retinue of all six consciousnesses. The minor afflictive mental factors, and the uncertain regret, sleep, pride, doubt, these fourteen arise only in the retinue of mind-consciousness. According to the view of the eight aggregates of consciousness (from the Thirty Verses: "Always with contact and attention, contact, feeling, conception, and thought are present. In it, feeling is neutral; the base is unobscured and unindicated."), in the retinue of the base consciousness there are five omnipresent [mental factors] (only neutral feeling), and in the retinue of afflicted mind there are five omnipresent [mental factors], and the obscured and unindicated view of the perishable aggregate, ignorance, pride, and desire, these four root afflictions (from the Compendium of Topics, the five of torpor, excitement, lack of faith, laziness, and carelessness; and from the Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, the three of forgetfulness, distraction, and non-intelligence, that is, the many secondary afflictions of the afflictive mental factors, eight in total, seventeen in total.) arise (and, in the commentary on the Thirty Verses, it is said that in it also there is neutral feeling, that is, obscured and unindicated neutral feeling, corresponding to neutral feeling), so it is thought. The reasons for these should also be understood from the (respective) scriptures. The difference between mind and mental factors, and the analysis of one and different, has been explained. Fifth, because they arise immediately from the mind, they are called mental factors. As it is said in the sutra: These phenomena of thought and conception arise from the mind and depend on the mind. Therefore (for this, the Rays school thinks that the similar kinds of each, from the previous one producing the later one, have no continuity.) Second, the detailed classification of mental factors that ascertain the meaning of the scriptures, and incidentally explaining the uncertain, explaining in whose retinue of mind the mental factors arise, explaining the differences of similar mental factors, and explaining the categories of names of mind and mental factors, in the first aspect of the five, there are also five, among which the nature and classification of feeling, which explains the many grounds of mind, has been explained, and the function is (from the Fifty Verses on the Guru,
